Know Your Gods - Gork and Mork

October 8, 2008 – 8:10 am

Part Ten of Ten - Know Your Gods is an original Warhammer Online lore series by Cicadymn (Sam).

The day has finally come when we finish the Know Your Gods segment! Granted there is always more to learn about in the rich fantasy world of Warhammer, but for this series we have reached the end of the road! It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the final pair of gods, Gork and Mork! Time to get your Waaagh! on boyz and girlz! I wanted to get fireworks to shoot off in celebration, but it just wasn’t in the budget. Anyway, lets get right down to the nitty gritty mean green machines that are Gork and Mork.

As you may have heard, this pair of gods is always described as one being brutally cunning and the other cunningly brutal. What’s another simple way of saying this? Well, one will hit you while you’re not looking, and the other will hit you harder when you are looking. This pair of gods, much like the Chaos gods, and Sigmar, show regular physical manifestations of power. What better example then in the Collector’s Edition comic book: on a couple pages you see the shaman Gazbag call down the fist and foot of Gork, or Mork, on his enemies. If you hadn’t believed they were real before, you would after encountering that! Gork and Mork will often give worthy greenskins aid in battle, which only encourages the bloodthirsty greenskins into even more dire situations that only a Waaagh! crazed orc could make it out of. For orcs, it doesn’t really matter which god you worship. As long as you know your place under their foot, you will be alright.

It is believed by many that Gork is the god of strength while Mork is the god of cunning and magic. As one would assume from this the shamans and others take a generous liking to Mork, some even going so far as to saying that Mork himself is acutally a goblin. Sigmar help you if you mention that around the bonfire in an orc warcamp, because what will follow will most likely include a few missing limbs and a pile of bodies. Speaking of campire stories, in greenskin mythology Gork and Mork often fight against other gods, including the Chaos gods, and those of the other races. As would be expected from the cunning and brutal pair, they never lose. But whether those stories are real remains to be seen. Then again, tell any greenskin that and you might end up in pieces.

So what do all you raving and brutal greenskins get for worshipping Gork and/or Mork? Aside from the assurance that even if you die, you will be simply swallowed up by the greenskin god and spat back out into the battle field with a fresh new body, you’ll also get to go into battle knowing that a visible pair of powerful greenskins are watching over you. Since reincarnation is the common belief for greenskins they usually aren’t all that afraid to dive into a sea of enemy troops regardless of what they happen to be. Good news for greenskins, but bad news for anyone infront of their monsterous Waaaghs!

That’s all there is to it folks. I hope these past ten segments have helped you find your niche in the Warhammer world. There is endless material to wade through once you find your diety, so read up and get involved in the Warhammer community! It’s a lot of fun once you get to know a little bit of whats going on, and that little skill sitting on your action bar means a lot more when you know where it comes from!

  6. Heh, Seems every race in this game is zealous

One thing i don’t really get with the gods in WAR (well besides chaos and elf gods) Did they all start mortal then become gods? or were they gods in the first place. Sigmar obviously comes to mind but what about the dwarf god who went up to the chaos wastes to fight against insurmountable odds…But isn’t he a god?

  7. @Ruur, Horned rat was covered under Minor gods. Perhaps this series will give him his own once Skaven become a playable race, but not before then. As for the Old Ones, they aren’t prevalent enough for me to consider putting in. There is a lot of talk of them in 40k, but I haven’t seen nearly as much in FB.

@Forced to Order, Doesn’t say, but it’s obviously one of the Orc gods.

@James, A lot of the Order gods seem to have gone from mortal and be elevated to god status. Perhaps with Dwarves they’re more legendary then god, but they are still mentioned quite a bit in just about everything. As for Sigmar, since he gives visible signs, ala warrior priests, he is very much considered a god.

  8. in some “real” life religions gods are not always inmortal or invulnerables but i dont get how they summoned that big foot.
i thought the shamans used the waaagh´s collective energy to make spells.
