Gold Farmers/Spammers: 1% of WAR Population?
September 26, 2008 – 8:34 amI just noticed something Mark wrote on the WHA forums about gold farmers/spammers:
3) As of this message, we are in the process of permanently banning another 2500 accounts from our game, bringing the total to 4,000 banned so far. We hope that today’s banning will significantly slow down the number and frequency of spammers for a little while at least.
Let’s just assume (yeah, I know…) the real number of gold farmers are actually 5,000 instead of 4,000, which probably isn’t too big of a stretch. Let’s also assume Mythic is telling us the truth about having 500,000 people playing WAR right now.
5,000/500,000 = 0.01 (1%)
If we use these numbers, that means that 1 out of every 100 people on your server is a gold farmer/spammer. Craziness! I don’t know if that number seems high to you, but it sure seems high to me!

It’s probably important to note that it’s not 1% of all players online but 1% of all accounts. Given that gold farmers breed accounts like jackrabbits and don’t have them all logged all the time, it’s probably safe to assume that the number of players is half that.
But still… that’s crazy! I wonder if any of the scavenging noobs you see in scenarios are really gold-diggers…

I have never seen gold spamming this bad, in my limited MMO experience. It does seem like there is a lot of it. Regardless of what you think of gold buying, it is VERY annoying to be solicited constantly, especially when you are trying to communicate with a group. The spam ads push all the recent communique off the screen due to their length. Also, do we need gold in WAR yet? I haven’t had a financial problem yet. Maybe if I get into a guild there will be a cash sink, but I just haven’t seen a need yet (my highest lvl character is a lvl 10 SM).

Not heard of any goldsell spam on our server at all yet.. wonder if they’re honing in on America

Never seen any spam on our server either, but we’re RP, so that may make a difference too.

@Bleak - That’s probably not the best phrasing considering all the negative connotations associated with “gold farming,” I’ll agree.
However, let me assure you that this isn’t a guide for gold farmers/sellers. It’s meant to give the average player a wide range of advice, and one section is dedicated to earning money (for yourself - not to sell on eBay).

On Tor Elyr, US-coreRP I was getting spammed pretty heavily. Then I put in SpamMeNot, got one more, it automatically reported the person, sent them a tell informing them of that and since then I have received zero gold adverts. This is the exact same way I dealt with it in wow, with the same degree of success

Supply and demand… supply and demand.
Still, now I will think of rabbits humpin’ when I think about gold farmers.

Haven’t seen or heard any gold spammers on EU servers, so maybe you guys have them all.
By Spinks on Sep 26, 2008
[EU]Burlok here, Core-RP. Haven’t seen/heard a single gold spammer either. Hopefully it will stay that way too.

Ugh on the US side they’re getting worse. I get like 10 tells an hour.
By Zealbot on Sep 26, 2008
I’d believe it … I get an average of 5 tells an hour from gold spammers.
Is anyone else having problem with the /ignore feature? I noticed today that when I put some of the gold spammers that were repeating messages that they were still getting through. I did a /bug about it, but wondering if it’s just me …

They smell a hit.

My bet would be that they are including buyer bans in that number…

The number of gold farming tells I’ve been recieving in WAR is roughly equivalent to what I experienced in WOW before Blizz put the boot down. I’m hoping Mythic takes one thing that Blizz didn’t steal from them and gives us the ability to easily /ignore and /report spammer.
By Spitelash on Sep 27, 2008
Play on two realms in EU(Hirn and Dorn,) so far not had a sniff of a spammer. Seems really odd they’ve had a blitz over in the US, but hardly a murmer here in Europe yet?
By Hellebron on Sep 27, 2008
I finally did my first /ignore today!
