My Warhammer Videos
August 21, 2008 – 10:26 amAccording to the Vimeo blog, they will no longer be supporting game videos, which is a big pain in my arse because they’re one of the few good services out there that support HD, widescreen quality. Compared to all other services, I found Vimeo videos looked absolutely beautiful in comparison.
There are three main reasons why they won’t be supporting gaming videos, which include potential copyright infringement, scaling issues (gaming videos are the single biggest resource hog on their site), and apparently these videos go against their creative, artsy aspirations as a service mainly aimed at filmmakers.
All I can say is, “Bummer, dude.”
I’ve been loooking around, and while there are other HD solutions, there are also drawbacks to those services. The biggest drawback is their audience reach. A site like GameVee can’t even come close to reaching the amount of eyes a service like YouTube can, even though the videos look better. I just saw a post by Brent over at TextWall giving a shoutout to all his new viewers. His videos are amazing, and much more detailed than mine, however, I think it’s fair to say the reach of YouTube played a major part in the massive increase in traffic his blog has received lately. Those same awesome videos on a smaller site like GameVee or even Vimeo wouldn’t have brought as many new readers. Not because of quality, which would be there in both scenarios, but because of reach.
All my Vimeo videos will be taken down by September 1st at the latest, so I really need to find another host, and FAST! Having seen Brent’s videos, and even Keen’s, the quality is definitely worse (because of compression not content), but I just don’t know if there are any other good options when you factor in the amount of reach they’re gaining as an offset. That said, the YouTube videos don’t look bad - just not as good as Vimeo.
I know a lot more about video capture/editing than I did when some of these first videos were made, so I think I may be able to eke out some fairly good future videos on YouTube. I also learned a lot from watching videos from guys like Brent and Keen, so expect me to flatter them with a bit of mimmickery from time to time. I’d think I’d like to experiment with narration in some of my future clips. Not all, just some. I’ve also taken what some of you guys have said to heart as well. Most of my future videos will keep the native in-game sound. That said, some will also feature music if I think it will enhance the experience (mostly highlight reel type RvR fights).
So yeah… I feel kind of deflated that Vimeo is pulling the rug out from under game filmmakers, and a bit guilty that I want to reach the largest audience possible by pandering to the YouTube crowd… but those are my plans anyway. I hope you’ll continue to support this site and our video projects!
Vive la YouTube! *cringe*

What a shame. I would have never heard of them if not for video game footage. Now I really have no reason to use their site at all, their loss and ours

I thought about Vimeo too for the same reasons you did, but I had also seen the notice about not supporting game vids. I only use YouTube because I know it will reach more people. But for posting on my blog I use Filefront because they offer high quality downloads to anyone not happy with the streamed version. It sucks, because I have to do 2x the uploads to do this but there doesn’t seem to be a better solution right now. I don’t see Filefront being the answer to widescreen videos like Vimeo was, perhaps Veoh will? Not sure. Anyway, good luck man as you have great coverage of the greenskins, makes me wish I had narrowed my focus for better coverage ><

I hear YouTube has plans to support widescreen, but I doubt they’ll ease up on their compression standards to support actual HD. I’m not sure about the max upload size limit, but I do know that a couple of my earlier vids (that were over 11 minutes) were not accepted due to length violations.
Most of my videos from here on out will be less than 7 minutes, so that shouldn’t be too big of a problem I guess.

Ah that is a shame.. i just signed up at Vimeo! I am to looking for a HD hosting service as i dont like the quality and size of youtube… maybe we should make a warhammer HD video hosting site and earn some money

Lol - I think the main reason Vimeo is banning game videos is that they can’t make any money off them due to the massive load it puts on their servers!
Then again, I don’t think they’re monetizing their service yet anyway. Apparently, they have a subscription plan in the words, but I haven’t seen any ads on the site.

Yeah i guess it all about the money
Gamevee dosent look to bad and should support a HD (maybe not true HD but close enough) Havent seen any other HD video sites out there.

Will there be a war Movies site at some point that can be used, I am sure people who have made money from WoW with such sites will be casting a eye towards WaR.
Youtube is also not to bad, you can also just post small clips and give the link to your site and HD version on GameVee. That could increase your site traffic and also direct intersted people seeing the “trailer” to the larger video.
Anyway - love you site, been reading it for a long time now, hope you keep the blogger flame burning - its much appreciated.

So far, I’ve found these WAR-specific sites:
http://whmovies.com
http://warhammeronline.tv
I’m thinking I will do the multiple-hosting solution and link to the HD versions on this site. It will be a hassle to upload all that stuff but once things have settled I’ll probably only be doing one video per week of highlight footage, so it shouldn’t be too horrible to maintain.
Thanks for all the suggestions and support!

I’m liking Gamevee so far, the widescreen support is nice and the quality is good. I still hate doing the double and triple upload thing, but YouTube still can’t be beat for reaching the masses.

It definitely can’t! I’ve had a relatively nice response from my videos considering I uploaded them to YouTube several days after the NDA was lifted and missed out on the initial surge of searchers.
Now that my primary 12 beta videos are secure, I’ll be able to relax a bit more and really focus on 3-4 really good videos per month.
