Guide: Build a Warhammer Online PC!
August 19, 2008 – 8:25 pm
It is very important to have a PC capable of running Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) in large-scale RvR situations because that is what the game is all about. Nothing is worse than dying to another player because your system lagged or froze completely. Even if you are only interested in the PvE elements of WAR, the endgame PvE takes place in large cities with many allies and NPCs running around.
Mythic released a minimum spec sheet for Warhammer Online, but personally, I don’t think you would enjoy the game as it was meant to be played based on the minimum requirements listed. Feel free to give it a try for yourself, however, if it’s your intention to play the game at the lowest possible settings and still lag terribly in “hairy” game situations, you might as well stop reading this guide now.
This guide is based on my beta impressions, having played with both an older, outdated system and a newer, high end gaming rig. There is a possibility that the graphics will be optimized further, so I will try keeping it up to date once the game goes live based on user feedback.
Depending on the brand of component you buy, the price can fluctuate greatly. I will list the most basic information here and it will be your job to do some researching and price matching at your favorite retailers (online or otherwise). If you don’t have the minimum specs listed below, please consider an upgrade or you will likely suffer poor performance. Components not listed below are not overly important to how well WAR will perform (case, motherboard, hard drive, etc.).
Once you are finished with this guide, head over to Warhammer Alliance for much more in-depth and technical recommendations. I want to keep this guide as simple and direct as possible, so I hope you enjoy it. Also, thanks to Thade of Archmagery for inspiring the Other Considerations section below.
Low-range WAR PC
You might be able to scrape by with an older system, but it definitely won’t be fun. My older system, which is just over 3-years old:
- ASUS P4P800SE Motherboard AGP
- Intel Pentium 3.0GHz w/HT
- 1GB of DDR-400 PC3200 RAM
- XFX GeForce 6800XT Xtreme 256MB/256-bit AGP
- Windows XP
- 1024×768 resolution
The system could actually handle most of WAR at the lowest graphic settings, but keep and city siege were extremely choppy (2-3 FPS if I wasn’t completely frozen). I refused to be renown-fodder for everyone I came up against, so I decided to upgrade. Please do the same if this is anywhere near your current PC or you just won’t enjoy the game as it was intended to be played.
A newer video card would have probably done the trick but I felt it was time for a more powerful computer anyway. If you have an AGP motherboard and don’t want to upgrade your entire system, go with a Radeon 3850 512MB AGP and make sure your power supply is fairly new due to different amp and watt outputs and deterioration over time (420-460W minimum). That should get you by for a while.
Mid-range WAR PC (at least)
This system will do the trick. You should be able to adjust the graphics settings to at least medium and not experience much FPS lag. This is recommended for resolutions at or below 1280×1024 (older CRT monitors), though it should perform well enough at 1680×1050 for LCDs too. An older GeForce 7900GS or 7950GT 512MB would work too, but you can’t really find them anymore.
CPU
- Any single core in the 2.8-3.0 GHz range (aside from Celerons and Semprons) or…
- Any dual core in the 1.8-2.4 GHz range (especially if you want to overclock)
Memory (RAM)
- 2GB of DDR-400 RAM or…
- 2GB of DDR-667 RAM
Video Card
- GeForce 8600GT/GTS, GeForce 9600GT 512MB PCI-E, or…
- Radeon 3870 512MB PCI-E
High-range WAR PC (at least)
This system will run everything flawlessly at high graphic settings. This is recommended for resolutions at 1680×1050+ (22in widescreen LCDs). This is roughly what I have. See below for comments.
CPU
- Dual core 2.8 GHz - 3.0 GHz or…
- Quad core 2.4 GHz + (quad cores are overkill, but it won’t hurt if you already have one)
Memory (RAM)
- 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM (in Windows XP or Vista 32-bit) or…
- 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM (in Windows Vista 64-bit)
Video Card
- GeForce 8800GT/GTS, 9800GTX 512MB PCI-E or…
- Radeon 4850 512MB PCI-E
Other Considerations
- Laptops - Pros (compact and mobile) and Cons (expensive for gaming quality, battery life, overheating, lack of upgrade options, potential wireless-only connectivity)
- Wireless vs. cable network - It is better to play WAR with a direct network connection because it’s going to be very annoying if you have a network hiccup and lag, freeze, or lose a connection to the game.
- Single video cards vs. SLI/Crossfire - While the game can become graphically intensive at times, you shouldn’t need SLI or Crossfire setups unless you’re using cards below the minimum recommendations above or play at higher resolutions (24in LCDs). You will obviously see an improvement, but it isn’t really necessary.
- Windows Vista vs. XP - Unless you’re also playing DX10 games (WAR is only DX9 atm), there’s no need to “upgrade” to Vista. There haven’t been many complaints about Vista and WAR, but it is much more resource hungry than XP, so you may need more memory (RAM).
- Extra processes - Windows XP and Vista are not the most efficient operating systems in a multi-task environment. Killing any unnecessary processes during your gaming sessions will definitely help your game run smoother, especially on a lower-range system (e.g., iTunes updater, anti-virus software, etc.).
- Overclocking - You can get away with older and/or less powerful CPUs and video cards if you overclock them. I would not recommend it unless you have some pretty good knowledge of computers (it also voids your warranty), however, there are a number of guides out there for beginners and you have to start somewhere, right? Since WAR relies more heavily on your GPU rather than your CPU, I would start with the video card first, which can be more easily overclocked with software (e.g., RivaTuner). This is a risk you take on yourself… please don’t blame me if your PC starts smoking (literally)!
My New Computer
Because my old PC couldn’t really cut it, I built the highest powered gaming machine $1500 could buy (peripherals included). My new system is more than capable of maxing out WAR, but I wanted to give it a bit of future proofing for newer games and expansions.
I am running the game in 1680×1050 at the highest in games graphic settings with 4xAA/4xAF and averaging out at 50FPS in large-scale RvR battles (around keeps and the like). While recording in FRAPS, I only drop around 10FPS to 35-40, which is perfectly fine for me!
The Machine
- Antec 900 Mid Tower Gamer Case ATX
- EVGA nForce 750I SLI Ftw motherboard
- Intel e8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz dual core CPU
- 2GB OCZ Platinum XTC Rev.2 DDR2-800 PC6400 RAM 4-4-4-15
- XFX GeForce 9800GTX 512MB 675 MHz/2.2 GHz video card
- OCZ GameXStream 700W ATX12V power supply
- Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11 SATA2 32MB Cache hard drive
- LG GSA-H55L DVD burner
- Windows XP SP3
Peripherals
- Samsung Syncmaster 2253BW 22in Widescreen 1680×1050 LCD
- Logitech G11 gaming keyboard
- Logitech MX518 gaming mouse
- Steelpad mouse pad
What are your system specs? How’s the performance? Any issues? I will adjust the above specs based on user feedback. Feel free to ask any questions in the comment section and either I or someone in the community should be able to give you an answer! Happy gaming.

Excellent information Snafzg!
I wasn’t necessarily worried about my PC’s specs, but this gives everyone a great idea of what to expect.
Nicely done.
Quick question though…I noticed that you own a Logitech G11 gaming keyboard. Any idea if those users will get the almighty ban bat from Mythic if they start using those macro keys?

By Jason on Aug 19, 2008
Hmmm, good question. I don’t honestly know. I haven’t heard anything about that from beta testers or devs on the boards. I would guess not, but I’ll try finding out.
That keyboard is crazy though. It takes a LOT of getting used to because your hands feel as though they’re offset too much to the right because of those additional macro keys. It has taken a LOT of getting used to…
It doesn’t help that I use a completely different keyboard all day at work.
By Snafzg on Aug 19, 2008
I just ordered that monitor. Whee!
By arbitrary on Aug 20, 2008
Nice info Snafzg, I just upgraded a few weeks ago and I definitely fit in the high end range, good to hear.
One thing to consider adding is Operating System, especially a key note at the higher end. If you happen to be running Windows XP standard, you won’t take advantage of all that RAM. It’s capped at 4gb (that includes system ram AND video ram). Make the move up to a 64 bit version of XP or Vista.
By Blackwings on Aug 20, 2008
From all the research I’ve done, the maximum amount of memory that can be allocated in Windows XP 32-bit is 3GB, which includes video memory. Therefore, 2GB of DDR-RAM + 512MB of Graphic DDR-RAM comes very close to hitting that cap. You could put in a single 512MB or 1GB stick to cap yourself but RAM runs more efficiently in pairs, so the memory may run hotter than is optimal. Technically, you could go with 4GB in an XP-32 bit system, which will run more efficiently than 3GB (because of the pairings), but you won’t be getting the most bang out of your buck (1GB will be wasted if you have a 512MB video card, and you probably won’t notice the extra 512MB of regular memory anyway).
Upgrading to XP-64 is a very bad idea mainly because of all the driver and compatability issues. I’ve heard to stay away from this OS like the plague.
Going to Vista-32 gives you the same capacity issues as you’d face with XP-32 except that Vista is a more resource hungry OS and the 2-2.5GB of regular RAM will be stretched much farther.
Vista-64 is really the best solution if you’re going for 4GB+ (including video memory) because I haven’t heard of any issues with WAR. It will also support DirectX10, which may be what some people are after, but I have a feeling DX11 will become the adopted standard and DX10 will fall by the wayside due to a number of issues. Vista has a number of other issues, which you may want to research, but I don’t think it would hurt when playing WAR if that’s your primary goal.
It’s kind of a circular argument though…
“I want 4GB, so I’ll get Vista-64.”
Well, just by choosing Vista-64, you’ll NEED 4GB to run efficiently because it’s a bigger resource hog than XP.
I’ll sum this all up by saying I am more than happy with my performance using XP-32 with 2GB of RAM and a 512MB video card.

XFX is probably the worst gaming hardware company you could choose. Horrible quality control and a laundry list of rebate scams.

By heartless_ on Aug 20, 2008
I’ve actually had good experiences with XFX before, but I think everyone has a horror story for one of the top manufacturers. I actually just got an update on my eVGA rebate for my motherboard (they also make high end video cards) and they said my UPC was invalid. Considering I triple-checked everything before sending it in, it seems like I’m being scammed here too.
Like I said, everyone has a horror story to share.

I am running Windows XP 64 bit on my home system with an E8500 CPU, 4GB OCZ on an 680i MB and a 9800GTX card with no issues at all.
Works great and easy to find drivers, all my old 32 bit programs (and I have a ton) are working flawlessly and fast.
I’ve heard the same concerns you had about the 64 bit version of XP but gave it a go anyway and would highly recommend it.
By Blackwings on Aug 20, 2008
Awesome guide thanks a ton for this, goin back to your low-end comp(I’m not too sure if you reply, but a reply from others can work too)
I have a laptop that is fairly new about 5months old and only lacks a vid card.
I’m going to be downgrading to windows XP sometime this week and the specs are.
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-57
You Have: 1.90 GHz Performance Rated at 4.84 GHz
You Have: NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M (GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M)
I dont have money atm to buy myself a desktop, but for the while hopefully this can atleast run on Low with the dual core for atleast 15-20.
By Echo on Aug 20, 2008
@Blackwings - Good to hear!
@Echo - I’m not too familiar with mobile graphic cards, but Mythic has this to say about them in their minimum specs sheet:
“Laptop versions of these chipsets may work, but may run comparatively slowly. Standalone cards that are installed in vanilla PCI slots (not PCIe or PCIx or AGP), such as some GeForce FX variants, will perform poorly. Integrated chipsets such as the ATI Xpress and the NVIDIA TurboCache variants will have low settings selected, but should run satisfactorily.”
I did a quick search on your card and came up with this link: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t54953.html. Read the whole thing. Some of it is pretty discouraging for your situation but one of the posts give you some good tips on what to try out.
I think you may be able to play the game, but you will have to crank everything WAY down.
Sorry I couldn’t bring you better news.
By Snafzg on Aug 20, 2008
so my comp has like 778 MB of memory, and i know thats under the minimun reqiurements, but heres the thing, i am only using like 770 out of 778, so..this being the case, would that help the performance of my comp running WAR? though i do have a really crappy video card made by intell.
By Jake on Aug 20, 2008
sweet, im glad you stated the specs for running max i just hope the bar doesnt raise toooo muc when its released, i just spent about 700$ building a new tower to run war.
antec 900 case
2gb corsair RAM 800
EVGA 8800gt 512
Elitegroup 780gm
amd 5400+ brisbane 2.8ghz
coolmax v-600 600w
and some shitty $16 am2 cpu cooler
just hope its enough. im gonna be runnin xp tho not vista
By Xlonewolfx46 on Aug 21, 2008
Anyone know if there are issues with PCI-e Cards I just upgraded my video card to an eGeForce 7300GS it’s a 256mb video card. And before you ask only slot I had for video card upgrades was a PCI-e slot.
By GraveChelios on Aug 21, 2008
I just built my wife a new PC for Warhammer
Antec 300 case
Antec 500 watt P/S
ASUS P5K SE Mobo
Intel E8500 C2Duo @3.16Ghz
4 GB OCZ RAM 1066
EVGA Nvidia 9800 GT 512
250GB 3GB/s SATA Western Digital HD
Vista Home Premium 32bit
Price came to just over $900 with all parts from newegg.com
By Robert on Aug 21, 2008
@ GraveChelios
PCI-e is the way to go brother. Either generation of PCI-e will run the game just fine and so will most AGP cards.
By Blackwings on Aug 21, 2008
@Jake - What is running that puts you at 770/778? I upgraded my old system from 1GB to 2GB DDR400 RAM and it made absolutely no difference playing WAR, so I returned it for a full refund. That same system had the Geforce 6800XT 256 in it. Is your video card supported on their minimum specs?
@Xlonewolfx46 - Your system will handle WAR beautfully (likely at max settings with all spell effects active).
@Robert - That computer will rock WAR as well!
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
well i actually look at my ram and im using 764 out of 768, and im not exactly sure what type of video card i have other than its made by intel.
By Jake on Aug 21, 2008
Just based on what you’ve said without more specific details, I think you may have a hard time running WAR.
How does your system handle other games? Counterstrike? World of Warcraft? Lord of the Rings Online? What kinds of games do you play and how well do they run?
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
Hey,
Sorry am abit of a nub when it comes to computer hardware.
Am looking at my Dxdiag and I have a AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+ ~2.2GHz.
Would this be able to run WAR?
I know the rest of my settings are within the minimum this one is just making me unsure if it will be ok or not.
Thanks for any help.
By Snealer on Aug 21, 2008
If all your other hardware matches up, I think you should be able to run WAR fine (at least on minimum settings).
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
well i played WoW and it ran really smoothly actually, hardly any lag, good motion, no complaints.
By Jake on Aug 21, 2008
WAR is going to be a bit more system intensive than WoW, however, if you ran everything really smoothly, you might be able to get by in WAR with the lowest settings (based on all your other feedback).
As an anecdote, my old system (above) handled WoW beautifully. Never any hiccups or complaints (except when I would first zone into Orgrimmar - brief lag/loading times). In earlier stages of WAR beta (when it was less optimized), I found it to be quite playable except in the big RvR situations (keep/city siege).
I think you might be able to get by in WAR but it won’t run as smoothly as WoW did and you probably won’t be able to participate in the large-scale RvR battles without severe lag hampering your experience.
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
well, thats what i was thinkin, thought id get some other thoughts on it, thx alot man
By Jake on Aug 21, 2008
I was just curious if you could perhaps put parts in as links to a site (not asking you to do all the footwork of finding the cheapest just want to be sure that I’m looking at the right stuff.)
By Ent on Aug 21, 2008
The reason I didn’t want to get into that is because a lot of the product pages on sites disappear over time and it would be a nightmare to maintain.
If you go to newegg.com and search for “Radeon 3850″ it will give you several versions of the card made by different manufacturers. From there, it’s pretty easy to post a question on the site asking for feedback about which card is best. That kind of information also changes quite frequently, so it would also be very hard for me to keep up with.
Once I get a bit more time, I’ll see what I can add to the above section that gives a bit more guidance for everyone.
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
Hey Snafzg, nice post. Little blunt, but who doesnt enjoy a little hammering of words every now and then so people can get to the point.
Your post actually got me wondering though how my PC would do. Would you mind giving me a ballpark FPS / performance threshold with these specs?
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Display Memory: 256.0 MB
Current Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Driver Name: nv4_disp.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0011.7519 (English)
Those are taken directly from my dxdiag run function. Just picked out what i thought was important / mentioned in WAR’s tech reqs.
Any guestimate would be helpful, thanks.
By Evanesco on Aug 21, 2008
This would only be a guess, but I think you could probably play the game on medium settings and average out around 25-30 FPS and possibly drop around 18-20 in large scale RvR. That’s quite playable really.
If you drop the quality for performance and turn off all the spell effects, you could probably maintain a consistent 30+ FPS in all situations.
Again though, this is just a guess because your specs are about in the middle of my old system and my new one (leaning more toward the old). I wasn’t able to test a system exactly like yours.
By Snafzg on Aug 21, 2008
Sounds like a winner to me. 15-30 fps in general no matter what yer doing is what a lot of people play at if I go by my guildies in other games.
I’ve played Everquest 2 on Med-High visual settings before with cranked up water effects and balls to the wall cloth simulation and it didnt drop to the ever feared unplayable 1-10 fps range. I’m thinking that if WAR is more cartoony (not cartoony in general, just more so than EQ2) than I will be ok. Quite frankly, running any Non-browser MMO thats not City of Heroes on max settings isn’t really a necessity for me. I like some flash and dazzle like a lot of people, but it doesnt need to be extravagant.
Anyway, as unnecessarily long-winded as that was, thanks again for the educated guess.
Now I can rest easy.
By Evanesco on Aug 21, 2008
Nice setup.
I built my current PC a few months ago just for Warhammer as well. Hopefully it will run everything on high settings, because my wallet really hurt afterward.

Hey Snaf, its Echo again :P, had one more thing I wanted to add to what I had earlier. I’m not sure if comparing WoW to Warhammer settings wise is going to matter but, i am not sure if you have ever played WoW or anything either :x, worth a shot. I was just stating that I play WoW on Low-settings with the laptop but the thing is my dual-core keeps me from not lagging at all, I have done BT/Hyjal without lag and also Kael’thas a very heavy graphic flashyness effects. But im not sure if that makes a difference was worth a shot and was wondering if you can give me a positive answer of the comp handling WAR.
By Echo on Aug 22, 2008
I fall solidly into the middle range region. though my card is only an 8400GS, best I could get for my low-profile system.
By Zeev on Aug 22, 2008
@Echo - Hehe, it’s hard for me to say you’ll be 100% fine because I don’t want you to buy the game solely on my recommendation only to find out it doesn’t work as well as you hoped. Does that make sense?
On one hand, you should be able to play WAR on the lowest settings if you could handle WoW in those situations.
On the other hand, your video card isn’t on Mythic’s official list of supported cards and their disclaimer states that you may not be able to run it very well on an unsupported card.
It’s a tough call! Is there any way you can get your hands on closed/open beta to give it a shot? That’s the only way we can really say for sure.
Sorry, I couldn’t give you a better answer.
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
ok so ive got another problem, i downloaded the WAR beta like 3 days ago and was waiting for preview weekend to play but when i downloaded the patch today and accepted the ToU i clicked the play button in the lower right hand corner of the Mythic patcher and my screen went black as if to start the game, then i heard noises of the game running but my screen stayed black and then it closes.
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
Do you have the latest drivers for your video card? I’m not sure where you’d find those for intel cards…
The graphics card is going to be the most important factor in getting WAR to play on your system… Have you checked the beta boards to see if anyone else is having similar issues?
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
umm i could try to upgrade the drivers, but i looked online, and tere seems to be a handful of ppl with the exact same problem.
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
I suggest replying to the thread or creating a new thread about it (if there isn’t one already) explaining your issues fully. They tend to have quite a few devs lurking on the boards and are pretty quick to jump on these kinds of issues.
Include your detailed system specs too (can be found in your DXDiag file - the one you submitted to get into the beta).
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
ok hers the info on my crappy video card.
name: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics controler
chip type: Intel(R) 82845G Graphics controler

Approx. total memory: 64.0 MB
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
Yeah, there’s your issue…
MINIMUM SPECS
- A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
There is absolutely no chance of getting your card to work with WAR. I’m sorry man…
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel845g/
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
well that blows lol, ill see if i can talk my dad into getting a new comp, mines crappy all round, accept the processor, thats the only good thing.
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
what if i upgrade it, any possibility there?
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
I’d suggest keeping your laptop for a mobile office machine and going with a desktop for gaming. It is just WAY easier to keep up to date for the latest games.
You can probably order a custom system from Newegg.com for around $800 including monitor that will rock WAR atm. Follow the above guide for recommendations (as well as the Warhammer Alliance link).
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
I don’t know of any way you can update your laptop graphic card… You have a laptop, right? Maybe I was confusing you with another person!
If you have a desktop, show me your motherboard specs from the DXDiag file.
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
where do i find my motherboard info? is that the systems tab?
By jake on Aug 22, 2008
Hmmm, I don’t have a DXDiag file to check… It should be in there somewhere, otherwise, what is the brand/model # of your computer? Doing a google search should be able to yield the specifications.
By Snafzg on Aug 22, 2008
I found in the past running games like WOW on a different hard drive to the OS drive boosted frames by a little. Or go with RAID for performance - Pretty Cheap upgrade compared to a new video card.
By Overlord on Aug 22, 2008
I have two different gaming rigs, a 3-year old machine and one I just built. I run both at 1440×900 resolution, which is about equivalent to 1280×1024.
Old machine: Athlon X2 4200+, 2g ram, NVidia 6800GT 256m, Windows XP.
New machine: Q9450 @ 3.2ghz, 4g ram, NVidia 8800GTS 512m, Windows Vista Ultimate.
The old machine can run WAR but I have to crank the settings down to minimum otherwise combat with more than just me and a mob is jerky. The new machine is nice and smooth with everything on max settings, except when zoning into a new location and loading stuff off disk.
For reference, both the old and the new machines ran WoW nicely. Old machine’s 50 fps in Shattrath with max settings = 20 fps in WAR with minimum settings.
By Mike on Aug 22, 2008
Yeah, we had pretty similar older systems with the same result. Thanks for posting to show the consistency!
By Snafzg on Aug 23, 2008
Great site, taught me a lot. Been looking at Newegg.com and found a good computer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227080 but I’m not a big computer person so I’m wondering if this will run WAR well (it better for this much money) but since I’m not looking to upgrade for atleast 3-4 years after this please let me know if there is ANY issue whatsoever with this and what I can do to sort it out. If there are any easy upgrades I can get that will really help me please let me know. Thanks again for all the great info.
By Andrew on Aug 23, 2008
Hey snaf, so I played my friends account for the preview weekend and was quite surprised as to it actually playing not so bad i’d assume i was getting 10-15/20fps but i mean it was clearly playable, and when i switched over to RvR it was the same frames. I was wondering if I downgraded from Vista to XP would it perform better and also if I played it in windows mode? Thanks for all the help

Btw for those of you who have a laptop with a GeForce 700m/nForce 610 chip i am getting 15-20fps on the laptop at “Fastest Framerate” I dont really see a “Low/med/high” so thats why ive been running.

If your trying to find the cheapest price for a budget I would use pricewatch:
http://www.pricewatch.com
it automatically searches for the lowest listed prices on just about any computer component you can think of.
Just pay attention to the vendor review ratings and you should be okay.
Also, visit ‘Can you run it’:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest
Just select ‘Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning’ from the drop down box.

Oh, and if you have an older computer - a few things to keep in mind if you’re trying to upgrade rather than build a new computer:
1) Make sure any new cpu you buy will fit in your existing motherboard.
- There have been a fair number of different cpu sockets used over the last 4-5 years and a new cpu may not fit your old motherboard.
2) Make sure any new video card you buy will fit in your existing motherboard.
- Many older motherboards have an AGP slot, newer graphic cards use a PCI-e or PCI-e 2.0 slot.
3) Make sure any new RAM (memory) you buy will work in your existing motherboard.
- Motherboards have used several different types of RAM over the years SDRAM (if your’s uses this, I would get a new comp), DDR, DDR2, DDR3. Make sure the memory your buying will work in your existing motherboard.
If your not sure what your existing motherboard specs are, you can check your motherboard manufacturer’s website, or motherboard review may have the spec sheet (database on the left hand side of the page):
http://www.mbreview.com/index.php
If your not sure what parts are in your computer, you can download SIW from Betanews:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/SIW/1097934999/1
Works excellent tool for finding out just what’s lurking under the hood.
Oh, one more thing popped into my head.
If you’re wondering about your cpu, if you have a dual core, or quad core you’re fine - the 2.5ghz minimum requirement is for a single processor running at 2.5ghz.
(AMD Athlon XP’s are dual cores).
By emseebee on Aug 24, 2008
@Andrew - Everything looks great on the computer you linked to, but you might want to consider upgrading the video card to one of these three options:
By Snafzg on Aug 24, 2008
@Echo - Downgrading from Vista to XP and playing in full screen mode would likely improve performance if you’re sitting at only 2GB of RAM.
By Snafzg on Aug 24, 2008
O_o i dont seem to see me my comment i posted earlier..

These are the only parts i need and with rebates + shipping it comes down to 250$. I was wondering would this be able to handle WAR on high? and also any recommendations you would like to make would be greatly appreciated. I mean 250 is the max i can spend :x.

What do I do ._. sorry, i have like 5 links in it for newegg items i wanted to ask you about
By Echo on Aug 24, 2008
Found it, sorry!
Chances are the video card will handle WAR fine, but you’ll get much better performance with an 8800GT… All the other components seem fine considering you’re on a budget!
Here’s the cheapest STABLE option I could find:
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133232 ($119.99)
This one is cheaper with a few more iffy reviews:
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814121263 ($99.99 after rebates).
You could go with a Radeon solution instead to meet in the middle of performance/price:
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102715 ($79.99 after rebate)
Here’s a bit more power for a bit more cash:
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131095 ($97.99 after rebate)
- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102719 ($109.99 after rebate)
By Snafzg on Aug 24, 2008
Thanks again snaf, also would that Radeon > 8800 GS? if so then ill definitely pick that one up instead. And i shouldnt be bottlenecked for anything i hope right?
By Echo on Aug 24, 2008
Also snaf last question of the whole WAR time, thanks for helping me with tons of stuff. If I do get the items i listed above + http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102715 the radeon vid card, what settings and how many fps should i average?
By Echo on Aug 25, 2008
Hmm, I am sure you’ll hit over 30 and probably average in the 40’s, but I can’t guarantee that since I haven’t tested it personally.
Compared to the 8800GS, I would probably go with the Radeon for the same price. I normally prefer GeForce cards, but Nvidia has been slacking lately, and the new ATI cards are quite nice. Plus, the 3850 has more memory and can push higher resolutions.
By Snafzg on Aug 25, 2008
Already that sounds great, would the 30fps go through RvR too? and also is that on low/med settings? If I got a 8800GT later on would that let me play on high with 50/60fps? and i wont be bottlenecked because of my CPU or anything right?
By Echo on Aug 25, 2008
I don’t think so…
As a benchmark, my 9800GTX 512 averages about 60FPS in PvE, 40FPS in RvR, and ~30 in really crazy RvR with 50+ people on screen fighting around massive world objects like keeps/cities/etc.
I run everything at cranked-to-max settings.
Chances are, you won’t be able to get those numbers unless you turn down the graphic settings but that’s not too bad considering your graphics card is less than half the price of mine…
Your CPU shouldn’t bottleneck the video card.
The 8800GT (which i’d put at 20% less quality than a 9800GTX) is probably the ideal price/quality card to play WAR with given the recent price drops. You could SLI another one for improved performance theoretically, but WAR is having SLI issues atm.
By Snafzg on Aug 25, 2008
Snaf are we talking about High/Medium/Low settings? Because I dont have a problem playing on Low if i’m getting like 60fps everywhere 40ish in RvR/ and if iw as gettting like 40fps on med i’d still be fine.
By Echo on Aug 25, 2008
I would guesstimate low-medium, leaning toward medium. And by medium, I mean good lighting and textures but no AA/AF.
By Snafzg on Aug 25, 2008
Already well thats that
Ill be ordering the comp tomorrow most likely, thanks for ALL the help!
Ill let you know how it turns out during OB :p, (Btw ill be running this on XP not vista). Again, thanks.
By Echo on Aug 25, 2008

Hey i was wondering if i would be able to run WAR with my laptop.
Its specs are : 2gb of ram
intel core duo t7500 2.2ghz
8600m gt 512 mb
Vista 32bit
let me know what you guys think thx.
By Vigo on Aug 26, 2008
About Vista being a memory-hogger, you might wanna read this; http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=34&threadid=2132562&enterthread=y
Started the beta with an old AMD3800+, X800PRO PCI-E, 1.5gb ram, win xp and it was going ok when it wasn’t any bigger battles but since I wanna be able to do it all at top performance I got a Q9550, 4870, 4gb ram and now it’s a delight. I ran both systems at 1680×1050.
By Jonas on Aug 26, 2008
Vigo, go to the ‘Can you run it’ website on your laptop:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest
Select ‘Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning’ from the drop down box and it will compare your computers hardware with the specs of the game and give you a verdict on how your computer will handle WAR (along with a ton of other games you can choose from as well).
By emseebee on Aug 26, 2008
@Vigo - Check the link above to make sure, but I would guess you could play this game on low-medium settings. My friend has a PC with similar specs (PCI-E version of the 8600) and he has awesome performance on low settings.
@Jonas - It’s light night and day, eh? That system can easily handle everything cranked (4x AA/AF) which makes this game look absolutely stunning!
@Emseebee - Thanks!
By Snafzg on Aug 26, 2008
Hey :D, got my new comp in.
GA-P35-DS3L
Intel Dual-core E2180 2.00Ghz(OCing it to 3.00)
200GigHDD
2gigs of 6400Ram
GeForce Nvidia 8600GT(Upgrading in a month to 8800GT)
— went from Low settings on WoW with 22fps to High settings on WoW with 80fps.
Huge upgrade imo. Can’t wait to play WAR
By Echo on Aug 30, 2008
Great job, man!
WAR will run quite nicely on that and even better with the 8800!
By Snafzg on Aug 31, 2008
Yep, I succesfully Overclocked to 3Ghz :D! Man I cannot wait to play WAR, this system OC’ing runs at 36 degrees Celc both cores, its SO cool.
By Echo on Aug 31, 2008
First off id just like to say tyvm for a excellent site!!
Second i noticed that you (Snafzg) said in a earlier post ,that you would put a 8800gt at 20% less quality than your 9800gtx. with the 8800gt its true
But if you look at the 8800GTS 512 you will find that the results are almost exactly the same as with the 9800gtx ofc having the slight upperhand.
But one of the best buys you can do, if you dont have the cash for the high end 9800 cards or the newer 260/280 is the 8800gts 512 (huge bang4bucks so to speak)
By Kian on Aug 31, 2008
Hey Snafgz just found your site last night perusing various Warhammer websites and very informational.
Now that I’ve read this post I’m slightly worried about whether or not my computer will be able to handle WH or not. Ive been playing WoW and at normal times I would have abour 60 fps no problem (except in first minutes in Shat and zoning into Org like you said.)
My computer is about 2 1/2 years old and the specs are:
Intel Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
NVidia GeForce 6800
You and another person stated with this card, I may have trouble just running WH on lowest settings so I’m wondering if it would be fine if I just updated my card? I was thinking either of these because I can’t afford a new desktop right now as I will be purchasing a laptop very soon.

By Eric on Sep 1, 2008
@Kian - Thanks! Good point.
@Eric - I’m guessing your motherboard supports PCI-E? If so, you have a wide range of options available to you and the two you selected are awesome choices. The 8800GT will run a little better than the 9600GT but it’s also a little more expensive.
What power supply do you have?
By Snafzg on Sep 1, 2008
I have a Dell XPS but I’m not very knowledgable about computer parts so I’m not sure what my power supply is or even what my motherboard supporting PCI-E means ^^;.
Can you explain what that is and if I can check that information on my computer?
By Eric on Sep 1, 2008
The easiest way would be to call Dell tech support with your serial number, explain that you want to upgrade your video card, and ask them these questions:
1) Can my motherboard support PCI-E video cards
2) What is the wattage of my power supply?
If your PSU is under 500W (watts), you will probably need an upgrade to handle an 8800GT or 9600GT because power supply performance deteriorates over time. If you have a 500W PSU, you may want to test it out with the new card to see if it will support it. If you run into display issues, it likely means your PSU needs replacing.
I believe the minimum requirement on an 8800GT or 9600GT is 450W on the PSU.
By Snafzg on Sep 2, 2008
Thanks for the help, Snafzg. I’ve downloaded the Beta client so on Friday when Open Beta starts, I’ll just check it out for myself, try and save $150-200 if I don’t need to spend it.
cheers mate.
By Eric on Sep 2, 2008
Sounds like a plan. They have optimized the graphics a lot since I used my old 6800, so performance may have increased. I could always play the PvE stuff fine, but the keep RvR was brutal.
By Snafzg on Sep 2, 2008
Yeah, I hear ya man. \
That, unfortunately is the main thing I’m looking to do. Especially those big battles, it looks so much fun, me rolling an Archmage and taking on the challenge of trying to heal my mates as well as punishing Destruction for their crimes ;).
By Eric on Sep 2, 2008
wtf?
you’ve added like no memory at all to the list
1GB DDR-3200 ?
LOL - that computer will suck. hard.
By Tim Bayliss on Sep 2, 2008
Which list? My list in the original article?
I did a quick upgrade to 2GB of PC3200 on my old system and it made absolutely zero difference in performance, so I returned it and went with a completely new system.
By Snafzg on Sep 3, 2008
Well, I’m running:
500 watt antec modular PSU
Intel C2D 3.16
eVGA 9800GTX+
4 gig OCZ DDR2 1066

By Vince on Sep 16, 2008
I don’t think you can go wrong with an 8800GT or 9600GT for a lower end card and a 9800GTX+ for the mid-upper end. I’m suggesting nVidia cards because you mentioned having a motherboard that supports SLI.
For ATI, I would suggest a 4850 or 4870.
By Snafzg on Sep 16, 2008
ok so weve talked before about my crappy cideo card, and well today i went out and picked up my WAR copy, got home took it out of the package, but when i put the CD in the drive and closed it nothing happened, no autoplay, and the drives said there werent any CD’s in them, could my Video card have anything to do with this?(again its a intel, 64 MB) Cd’s do not play at all. they are clean, no scratches or anything, and the comp acts as if its trying to read them.
i have a 48x DVD/CD drive.
By jake on Sep 17, 2008
Hmmm, sorry to hear that man. If your CD/DVD isn’t even spinning the CD, there appears to be a hardware or software issue. I’m 99% sure it wouldn’t be a video card issue.
Can you pop in the CD, open up Windows Explorer (My Computer), right-click your disc drive, and click Explore?
What happens then? If nothing, I’m pretty sure you got defective CDs. The best way to test that would be to bring it to a friend’s place or ask them to test it in the store you purchased it from. If the discs work for them, but not for you, then your drive is screwed.
At that point I would try another gaming/software disc to see if it boots up in your machine. If that disc doesn’t work then you know your drive is shot. If that disc boots up, then I have no idea what’s wrong!
By Snafzg on Sep 18, 2008
well i just booted starcraft off the CD so its not the drive, and when i go into my computer and explore the drive, it says please insert disk, after i have already put the disk in of course.
By jake on Sep 18, 2008
The next step is to test your WAR discs in another machine. If they don’t work, you need to exchange them. If they do work… well, I don’t really have any idea what to suggest if they do work.
By Snafzg on Sep 18, 2008
ya i just got a new cpu and i got a game card of geoforce 7100/nforce620 can someone tell me if thats a good card compared to my old card which is geoforce mx 4000. and would my new card run warhammer!!

ok, so im looking to upgrade my Dell demension 2400 to make it compatable for WAR. what exactly should do i need to upgrade, and to what?
By jake on Sep 19, 2008
hey guys
I’m currently struggling to play wow… well it doesn’t even run it goes in the game after 1-2 min it shuts down…
this is my spec
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
1024MB RAM
RADEON X600 Series
I use a 19 inch.
what do I need to add to play warhammer with full quality
By nando on Sep 19, 2008
@Poopers - Unfortunately, your GeForce 7100 isn’t listed in the game’s minimum system requirements (http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=168).
@Jake - I found this here, which says you’re pretty much out of luck for upgrade options. You will need a brand new computer to play WAR (http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-dimension-2400-pentium/1805-3118_7-30824846.html).
Product summary
The good: Full-fledged Pentium 4 CPU; spacious 120GB hard drive; dual optical drives; 15-inch LCD offers strong image quality; attractive case.
The bad: Limp speaker system; no AGP slot to upgrade weak onboard graphics chip; minitower case leaves little room for future expansion.
The bottom line: A solid desktop for families or students, Dell’s budget Dimension 2400 trades 3D gaming prowess for multiple optical drives and general functionality.
Specs: Processor: Intel Pentium 4 (2.66 GHz); Clock speed: 2.66 GHz; RAM installed: 512 MB DDR SDRAM
@Nando - You should be able to enjoy WAR by upgrading your graphics card to a Radeon 3850 AGP (assuming you are on AGP, otherwise PCI-E) ($90-120) and throwing in an extra 1GB ($30ish) of DDR RAM wouldn’t hurt either. The drawback here is that the new video card will probably require you to buy a new power supply as well (500 WATT for $50-75).
If you’re unfamiliar with PC upgrading, I’d pay someone to do it for you because you don’t want to mess anything up yourself. It will cost you less than $230 to upgrade your computer enough to play WAR.
The other option is spending about $700 on a brand new machine and using the same screen to save some extra cash.
By Snafzg on Sep 19, 2008
would this be an alright comp to play WAR on?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8878798&type=product&id=1210379087706
im not exaclty looking for an ultamite gaming comp, just one that will run WAR well.
By jake on Sep 19, 2008
That will actually work considering it has a PCI-E x 16 expansion slot for a stand-alone video card. Ask the Best Buy person if the power supply is strong enough to handle a GeForce 8800GT, GeForce 9600GT, or Radeon 4850. Those are my three recommended value video cards that will rock WAR.
Good luck!
By Snafzg on Sep 20, 2008
let me refraise this i mean i have geoforce 7100/nforce620i with a i at the end and i really dont want to go wasting money on a whole new computer i want to buy a cheap but good graphics card any suggestions?
By poopers on Sep 20, 2008
@Poopers - What computer do you have (brand/model #)? As long as your motherboard has an AGP or PCI-E x16 expansion card slot, you should be able to install a new video card that will allow you to play WAR.
If your motherboard ONLY supports onboard video, you’re out of luck.
By Snafzg on Sep 20, 2008
well i gots a intel pentinum 4 i think whatever its called.
By poopers on Sep 20, 2008

What does your computer say on the case? Dell? HP? Compaq? Gateway? Any model number?

You folks posting that there are driver issues in vista are so far behind the times that it makes me laugh. There are no issues with nvidia cards or any reasonably current hardware. Do not regurgitate (sp) the spew folks who know nothing about os spew. Your mon, vid card, hd, and mobo will run fine in vista plain and simple - unless you have an older vid card that is not vista certified. If you do, then it is prob so crappy that it would not run WAR well anyway. Vista is a resource hog for ram but you are much better running 4 gig of ram in vista than 2 gig in xp - that is the fact of it plain and simple!!!!! Please remember to research info before you parrot it and remember to check the dates of info that you do research.

Hi Kira,
That system looks pretty good but is there any way to up the video card to a Radeon 3750 or 3850? The 3650 is an entry-level card and might not run WAR very well, regardless of the power of all your other components.
By Snafzg on Oct 16, 2008
Well I just ordered the GATEWAY DX4710, so I will try it out with that graphic card, as long as the game works I am happy. Well do you at least think the ATI Radeon™ HD 3650 Graphics card is better then my Nvidia Geforce4 MX 420 that i have right now?

I dont know why but everytime I try to start playing by clickign on the game setup, it asks me “Are you sure you want to uninstall Warhamemr online?” Can some one help me get this game to work, iam on Windows Vista maybe thats why?
By Kira on Oct 20, 2008
What happens when you navigate to your install directory and double-click the ‘warpatch.exe’ file? It sounds like your game startup icon is somehow linked to the uninstall program instead of warpatch.exe.
If that doesn’t work, I could contact Mythic support directly. You can find it at warhammeronline.com.

i was just wondering if this laptop would run WAR really well.

I wouldn’t say “really well,” but probably well enough. Everything on it is great, but the graphics processor is mid-range. That said, the laptop is a good price. You won’t be able to play with all the settings maxed, but you should have good performance at medium settings.

I just bought Radeon 4850 and installed it as good as i can! Downloaded last drivers(i think) but yet when i enter WAR i get the famous “lines” going across the screen, randomly. Its a totally new card and i dont know what to do…. any tips?
By faint on Nov 7, 2008
1st, how does it work in other games? Same issue? If so, your card is borked.
2nd, are you using an LCD screen to play? Have you enabled the VSYNC option? If not, that may be an issue.
By Snafzg on Nov 7, 2008
yeah same issue in WOW as in WAR=P so the card seems to be broken, before i go back to the store, is there ANY way i might have broken it when installing? Just to know what i can expect when comming back to the store….
By faint on Nov 8, 2008
There’s a possibility that you could have broken it, but unless there are any missing pieces, I doubt it’s the case. I think the 4850 has a shell/covering over all the important pieces for protection anyway.
Try two things before taking it back:
1) Make sure the card is pressed firmly into the slot with even pressure from both ends.
2) Make sure the power cable is firmly connected as well.
If neither of those work, it’s an issue with the card.
