WAR CEs still available in NA

July 4, 2008 – 9:36 am

Way back on April 2, 2008, I wrote a piece theorizing why the North American Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Collector’s Edition pre-orders hadn’t sold out yet. That post was written one week after the CE’s were made available to the public.

It is now three months and one week later, and we’re still in the same situation.

Rather than getting into it all over again, I’d like to put the question to you:

Why do you think this is?

Apparently, Europeans are gobbling up their 60,000 copies at a much faster rate, and some vendors have even sold out! I’ve heard rumours that all metrics are pointing towards WAR being more successful over in Europe than here in North America, so that may explain things somewhat.

But come on… WAR is supposed to be one of the biggest threats to WoW we’ve ever seen. Even bigger than when EQ2 and WoW launched head to head way back in the day. How can…

Uhm, sorry about that. I said I’d leave this to you guys. Comment away! :)

  2. I think it’s because the Collector’s Edition is pretty expensive really - we have no figures as to how many normal copies have been pre-ordered, and I’d guess if you wanted to just give a game a go and see if you like it, you’d not pick the CE.

I’ve never before ordered a CE of an MMO, only once before had the CE of a computer game at all.

So I’m staying positive about it and assuming Europe sold more CEs cos we have less of them, a large geographical area, and lots of Warhammer fans here who’ll want that miniature and art book.

  3. From what I’ve heard, there were 55,000 copies of the CE in Europe vs. NA’s 60,000. Not that’s not a huge difference, but it might be a small factor. Also, I sometimes wonder that there were maybe originally only 60,000 copies, and that they did actually sell them all a long time ago, but they may actually be planning more without telling us (which might be why you can still order them). Who knows?

  4. I have never ordered a CE edition of a MMO, until now with WAR. I think some people who are on the fence playing other games are waiting until its lanuched to buy a copy of the game. I know several people who bought CE of Vanguard, AoC and feel they got burned with those games to risk it happening again.

  5. @Matt - that’s possible, but selling out of CE’s in NA would be huge news, so you’d think they’d want to release that kind of information.

It would definitely boost their shareholders’ confidence.

  6. I don’t think there will be a rush of preorders because you have never had to preorder a MMO. I walked into Best Buy and bought the WoW expansion with no problems, and I doubt they will run out of WAR.

  7. Actually, I remember SWG and the original WoW being quite difficult to find in certain American locations at launch. Up in Canada, however, we almost never seem to have this problem.

  8. What are the CE’s, $80 US? That is a decent chunk of change. Also, there may be some apprehension due to AoC’s launch. I did order my CE though :)

  9. I ordered my CE 1 week after AoC launched.

  10. I’d agree that there might be a lot of fence-sitting going on… people don’t want to shell out too much cash on the game until they know it’s going to be successful. The big lump of unpainted metal that comes with the CE might be a factor as well - it’s not the sort of thing that I imagine MMO players getting excited about, and tabletop WH players who want it are probably thinking they can pick it up when floods of them start appearing on ebay.

  11. 90% of the people I try and sell this game on are extremely skeptical. Normally, people are really receptive when they hear about a good thing, but I think people are worried about getting sucked in by another MMO. Also, people still think it looks like WoW…

  12. I know that some people wont pre-order the collector’s edition because the retail stores are being retarded with the Special Code slips. A few stores claim they never got any, some gave them to people who just pre-ordered the normal edition, and some stores are so stupid they think they are supposed to give them to people when the game is released…

I think more people would be happy to pre-order the CE if things weren’t so sloppy. Also I hear that some websites aren’t putting up a Sold Out! for reasons such as money… So we shall see what happens.

  13. Let us not forget that WoW collector’s editions did not sell out until a while after release…

I think it’s because there are two types of buyers for the CE — the ones who have to leap all over it the second it was announced, and the ones who will wait until near-release (or at least, when a release date is firmly stated) to get it. It’s really either/or — not a lot of between room.

I think that’s it as well, when there’s a release date, Pre orders will jump, atm it’s Fall 08. being an australian i’m not even sure when that is, (did order CE thou. :P)
but when we get a nov 08, pre order will jump and CE will sell out

  15. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the price (its costs a lot more in Europe around $120.00).

It may have a little to do with confidence, after Vanguard and AoC people are becoming sceptical and this time around there seems to be a wait and see philosophy, maybe people will rekindle interest when the NDA is lifted and game play videos and people views are posted everywhere for people to digest.

I have a feeling all will be well.

  16. I agree with the last few above me. Lot of “fence-sitters” out there at the moment. You have to realize the last couple of years there have been a LOT of flops that were advertised well.

Soon as the NDA is lifted word will fly, videos will be seen, etc. Then you’ll be hard pressed to find a CE anywhere, except Ebay for a 300% increase in price.

I have no doubt WAR will be easily over the million mark before the year ends.

  17. Just a sidenote:

The only horror stories I’ve heard of in regards to the codes are from retailers, and on-line orders.

Myself and quite a few others ordered from the EAstore, and none of us had issues with receiving our codes. All were in our inbox within 2-3 days. On-line orders, as well.

  18. I ordered 2 CE’s when they were announced (the standard, one for ebay, one for me approach).

When WoW was released there were Collector Editions sitting on shelves here in Edmonton (Canada) for at least a week or more after launch, so without a launch date even being announced it doesn’t surprise me that they aren’t selling out for WAR.

I then remember seeing a WoW Collector’s edition, still in its plastic wrap, selling on Ebay right around the time the Burning Crusade Launched, for $800, which I thought was insane.

Anyway, i’ll hang on to my extra CE and try and sell it right around the time WARs first expansion comes out and hope for even a moderate repeat.

  19. I ordered mine from Gamestop, but never got my open beta code e-mail. I went back and asked them…they said I probably deleted it and would not send me a new one. Though I doubt I deleted it, it is possible since the pricks at Gamestop have been sending me spam e-mails by the dozen everyday.

  20. Well your theory seems to have gone straight down the toilet, as 1 1/2 weeks later all stores are now sold out.

  22. I think Warhammer is much more popular in Europe. I always saw way more stores in England than I ever saw in Ohio when I lived there. It’s mainly the price that affects those who know about War in the US. That and they want to make sure that it will be a great game before they buy it.

As for preordering lots of games have done that. Most have special bonus items. SWG did, City of Heroes/Villains did. Seeing that a games workshop mini usually runs around 10 bucks and a art book of that size could be 20 or more I think its a good deal. There is still more bonuses you get.

It does seem most of the non EA sites have sold out they dont list it. Only amazon still has it up.
