Forum Watch (May 27 - June 3, 2008)
June 3, 2008 – 11:49 am
Greetings WARfans! It’s that time of the week again. That’s right! I released a Forum Watch on time! Once again brought to you by TheGreenskin.com and your friendly neighborhood Greenskin, me! Cicadymn! Now without further adieu it’s time for the Forum Watch! This week we’re looking into posts all across the WAR community, looking into the oh so beloved, Gear Vs. Skill controversy that most games have. Some fun threads that don’t really dish out much new information but are funny and interesting reads none the less. Don’t forget to check out the Dev response to Dwarven mounts if you haven’t seen it yet. And finally I lose my mind when it comes to death penalties. I swear, you people are going to be the death of me! But enough about gruesome murder, go check out these threads! And stay ready: WAR is coming.
Gear Vs Skill isn’t nearly as big an issue as it is in other games
- Here we look at some boys over at Warhammer Alliance Theoryhammering out how much and to what degree gear will play in WAR. I personally loved the post by Molnu, because even though a certain games fanboys would love to disagree I think he’s on the right track. What do you think? Step on into the fire and contribute!
On this day, I sentence Ye Cicadymn, to be hanged by the neck…until dead. Any last words?
- Waaaaaaaaagghhhhht did you expect a Greenskins last words to be? Well, at any rate, we’ve got another post over at Warhammer Alliance that tickles my fancy. We’re trying to decide if public hangings, not simply the bodies, but the actual hangings are going to fit into a teen rating? I for one hope so. What would be cooler than walking into Altdorf for the first time, admiring the city, only to be greeted with the last few seconds of some heretics lives!
Look at that Greenskin…he looks good enough to eat!
- Have you ever wondered what your favorite food would be like if it was encased in armor or magical cloth? Well that’s what the posters at Warhammer Conflict are trying to come to terms with! Are you good at Photoshop? MSpaint? Stop on over and throw your favorite meal into the ring. See how it stands up against some delicious favorites such as the Black Guard Carne Asada, the Goblin Mixed Nuts, or the devestating Foodrauder!
But why does it have to murder people? Because it’s chaos! But…does it have to be THAT ugly!
- Over at WAR-RvR we find fans talking about how they feel about the Daemonettes and just how -ette they look! Stop on over and find people writhing in pain from looking at the horrid creatures! If you haven’t seen them yet, your bound to eventually so you might as well get it over with!
- There is NO dancing in WAR. But still, it’s something that players seem to come to expect and always begs the question. “Can I do the twist and not get killed for it?” Well the simple answer for WAR is, No. While I would love to see a chicken do a chicken /dance it seems like thats a far off thought in a sea of mutating monsters and giant green fungi. Stop on over at WAR-RvR and sound off!
So, assuming Stealth makes it all the way in, Are YOU in?
- So, now that our projectile vomiting has stopped and our stomachs have since stopped doing somersaults over the release of stealth in WAR, we’re getting to the next step. Are you going to play one? Even as an alt? For myself the answer is simple. Absolutely not. For one I don’t care to be a big haired girl elf, nor another Van Helsing. But will they be popular once the game is launched? You better believe they will! Now that we’re past with the second step what comes next? I’m sure profit is up there somewhere as well.
No Map with the CE? What about all those hardcore map readers in the world!
- Over at the Warhammer side of the VNboards we find a player wishing upon a star that the collectors edition would come with a map! After thinking for a minute it kind of made sense. Not that you would actually use it over pulling your in game map up, but just to be something cool to hang up on the wall, especially to get distracted at while trying to finish some work, be it the money making kind or the home sort of work that students may be faced with. At any rate, it’s not going to destroy the game for anyone, just something cool that we semi-missed out on. What do you think? Head on over and sound off!
Spread to thin? Stuck to thick? Headstart could blow up on Mythic either way
- One last post from VNboards this week. This little gem is talking about what path Mythic will be taking for the headstart! If there are too few servers everyone could be clumped together and having the headstart wouldn’t really matter if the server is full by the time the game releases anyways. But at the same time making too many servers could be disastrous because there wouldn’t be anyone to fight! Somehow, someway, Mythic is going to have to find that magic number of servers to keep the population spread out far enough that the headstart will count, but at the same time not overdo it and face the lack of other players to fight against!
Finally! A confirmation on rocket-launching bunnies!
- Well not really. But this thread over at Ten Ton Hammer gives us an devs eye view of the oh so controversial, Dwarf mount. It seems to me that people who aren’t total dictators over going point by point with lore really don’t mind and welcome the change. Others grudgingly accept it, and others still, such as myself, love the mount and can’t wait to see it in action! But don’t take my word for it. Check them out and see what WAR’s Art direction Greg Grimsby has to say about it. Props to him for doing what has to be done and coming up with a cool idea in the end.
You masochists are driving me insane!
- Alright, lets get this straight. The next person that says you should lose points for dying is going to be crushed by a mighty Waaaagghhhh. Seriously! Urrrgghhh! Although that’s not entirely what this thread is about, it’s still brought up in there. If WAR ends up having a lack of a death penalty do you think it’ll ruin the game with massive zergs? I highly doubt that, but it’s something that people are still scared of. At the same time. I would absolutely hate to lose ANY sort of point for dying. Sometimes you can’t help but get mobbed and camped forever. “Oh but, you can call for help” Yea I’ve seen that. Laying at your corpse forever begging in general for some people to come and help is just…Alright. I’m stopping, no more, I’m not getting this worked up right now. Enjoy your WAR!

In regards to the public hangings in WAR: If they could get away with the suggested hanging of a young child in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (PG13), it should be more than acceptable in WAR.
In regards to the death penalty: I think there should be one just to prevent the mindless respawns we see in games like Team Fortress 2 and the WoW battlegrounds. Nothing permanent of course, just something that makes you want to play a bit smarter.

Isn’t sitting dead for a certain amount of time punishment enough? I believe there is a “release timer” in warhammer, similar to a rez timer in world of warcraft.

I love the example of TF2. People think, “Oh if there is no penalty there will be nothing but mindless zergs.” Which is only a tenth true. Yes, stupid people will mindlessly zerg no matter what, but in TF2 you’ll find quickly if you run in all by yourself that you’re just going to explode into bits. Thusly, only the extremely stupid people will continue to run in alone, everyone else will form, many times without even talking, a big group and work together to beat the enemy!
Time is really the only death penalty needed. I usually have a deathwish style of PvP, yea I’m gonna die, but I can delay them for my teammates, and maybe kill a few. If I get an XP /renown loss for trying to give my group time to get set up it would really hurt the experience for me.

Notice how generic I was in my comment?
A respawn timer is cool.
