Warhammer Online (dot) TV - Videos from the Age of Reckoning?

I came across WarhammerOnline.tv the other day and found it to be worth sharing. It’s the first (of many?) sites wanting to corner the video niche for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Not only do they plan on hosting WAR videos, they also have “sounds,” “pictures,” “community,” and “blog” sections.

In theory, I think this site has the potential to get really - REALLY - popular once the game launches, buuuuuut, I found one teensy (potentially big) flaw.

All the media seems to be hosted on their own private servers.

Maybe it’s just because I was streaming their front page Umbrella Corps recruitment video from my wireless laptop in bed this morning, but the browser status bar kept showing “Transferring data from warhammeronline.tv…” as the video was buffering, and to be honest, the speed wasn’t too good.

Hosting all the media internally is going to get very costly when you’re serving it up to hundreds of thousands of visitors per day. My suggestion is to integrate a YouTube, Google Video, Daily Motion, or Meta Cafe API and host the videos off site. Many other sites follow this method and it works out well for them.

They can even host their images and sound bytes off site in a similar fashion.

Unless they plan on making a lot of ad revenue from this site to recoup the hosting costs, or they are heavily funded, this is the only viable route. I’d hate to see such a good idea go to waste because they figured it out a month or so after launch, had to take their site down for reworking, and someone else came along and scooped the idea from them!
