Forum Watch (May 6 - May 13, 2008)

May 13, 2008 – 4:30 pm

Greetings WAR fans and welcome to the next installment of Forum Watch! Brought to you again by thegreenskin.com and you’re Waaagghh flavored host, Cicadymn! Once again I missed a week between the updates and am trying once again to get back on track. As we near the open beta more and more information is sure to pour out and ignite a firestorm of forum activity. This week we’re looking at dying, guilds, beta, and beloved hot topic: gender swapping! Aside from all the transsexual rabble-rousing we’ve got some good conversations this week for you to check out. Thegreenskin.com has been getting lots of updates lately so make sure you check back for more juicy tidbits of delicious WAR goodness. Until next time: Stay Ready, WAR is coming.

Be honest now, it’s not like we’re the dentist asking if you flossed everyday

  • In this thread we find a group over at Warhammer Alliance asking the tricky question. For what reason did you sign up? Are you just doing it because you want to test the game? Or do you just want to play it and see if it’s worth your money? In all the plethora of answers I think I’m stuck as a number three myself. I’m guilty of just wanting to play, but at the same time I want the game to be as awesome as possible so once the initial shock of getting in wears off, it’d be all about the bugs. Then again that can’t happen unless I’m admitted to the beta.

Concerns over leveling speed spawns an intelligent conversation

  • So if you’re a big fat armored slow tank, is it going to take you forever to level? I mean, with how fast DPS classes can kill things what if it ends up being unbalanced? Well this fear was put to rest over at Warhammer Alliance. Lots of big posts in this thread so bring your reading classes and the best half of your brain.

Hate you, hate you, hate you, you’re cool. Hate you…

  • Theoryhammer time, what do you think will be the class you want to kill the most? Will it be that inevitable shadow warrior Llegollaas or the little annoying squig herder in his mobile squig? True many people point out that red = dead but at the same time who do you want to kill first? Somebodies got to go.

Death Penalties in WAR, They’re to die for!

  • Don’t let the new skin fool you (boy they go through those faster than an addict through crack!) It’s the same Warhammer conflict as before and once again they bring another good discussion to the table. What are the death penalties in WAR going to be? In this thread we see WAR fans going at one another trying to decide upon which penalty is the best. A small amount of time? A small XP loss? Gear Damage? After reading many of the responses in the thread I’ve come to believe that the majority of posters there are masochists. Some people are actually for the XP loss! I seem to recall that the developers wanted to keep the penalties small, because if they were large, then it would discourage fighting. In a game about WAR one shouldn’t be worried about if you’re gear is going to quit, or if you will loose all the work you spent grinding on squigs after being rolled by a better squad. I’m with Mark Jacobs on this one, Keep it small so we can concentrate fully on killing one another. Props to Zemok for driving the point home!

Guild system discourages having alts? I think so

  • Is it just me or does anyone else tend to have a guild with some close friends that is chock full of alts? I mean, I for one will create and play characters for fun and just throw them in the guild so they can have the tag on their name, or in case any of my guild mates see the character on and realize they can still contact me if they need something. Lets get this out of the way: I love the guild system, I love the idea of being able to level it up, I love the idea of standards and unlockable abilities. But I hate the fact that as of right now, there is no system in place for alts! For us alt-aholics it’s kind of a put down. Do you think they’ll come up with an alt system? It’s hard to say because no matter what players will find a way to abuse it. It’s my hope that they just take one for the team and put the system in place. Lest many characters be left in the cold harsh guildless wasteland.

What would internet anonymity be without gender confusion?

  • Our last Warhammer conflict thread this week entails the all to familiar concept of men not only playing female characters, but role-playing as them. I for one find this to be an outlandish idea filled with all sorts of crazy. Then again, it may be more common place then I realize. Though I have a few real life “friends” you can say that prefer to play women and always make sure to name themselves female sounding names in an effort to special treatment (which they get). I find it disturbing personally but I’m not going to judge the people, I suppose as long as they admit to being really male and don’t try to use their non-existent feminine wiles to get what they want then more power to them.

I’ll take a mug of mead please…Here’s an elf foot and three empire fingers…keep the change

  • Here’s a thread over at Only-WAR featuring none other than the currency system! While I say featuring it really has no more information than your average theoryhammering session would but at least it’s being discussed. Stop by for a chuckle from some of the readers suggestions and try to think up what the exact currency will be!

Seasons are an interesting concept, one I hope is considered

  • No joke in this threads link, after reading up shortly on the suggestion of seasons in WAR I couldn’t help but give the boys over at Only-WAR credit for coming up with a good point. I’d love to see seasons in WAR! Developers always want their players to be drawn in to the game, then why not have the seasons change? Going from spring to summer to fall and finally winter sounds like it could add an interesting perspective to the game. Although this late in the development cycle who knows if it could be added or not. (Maybe we’ll get Seasons instead of growth system since they said they wanted something else to replace it if it didn’t make it in!)

Pansies?! High Elves aren’t Pansies! They’re frail little buttercup flowers with swords

  • This last thread comes to us all the way from the Ten Ton Hammer Forums. Aside from the outlandish claims that High Elves “pwn all” this thread is another great place to show off your undying hatred for everything elven, or defend your twirling elvish brethren in what can only be described as some sort of creepy flame proof dance.
