You CAN have everything…

WoW PvE + DAOC RvR = Impossible?

It’s a PvP game, and as with any GOOD PvP-focused game, you have to make sacrifices on the PvE end to get good PvP.

I highly doubt that. That’s like saying 640kb of memory ought to be enough for anybody. That’s setting your sights pretty low on the horizon of future MMORPG development.

But that’s what Hardcore Casual is saying… “You can’t have everything.” Basically, Syncaine is arguing that you can’t make a game that appeals to to hardcore PvPers and hardcore PvEers at the same time.

I think you can, and all it takes is a few simple concepts:

  • Allow people to progress in level by participating in PvP
  • Allow for an alternate path of progression grounded solely in PvE
  • Allow people to instantly jump from PvP to PvE and back at their leisure
  • Create great end-game content/conflict for both the PvPer and the PvEer
  • Give out top-tier gear in both PvE and PvP without a huge difference between them

You basically need to seamlessly roll a PvP and a PvE game into one. Does that sound like any game concept you’ve heard of before? Does that sound like what the devs have been talking about for Warhammer Online? I think so! A game using these concepts would probably see a crossover effect of hardcore PvPers eventually trying out PvE and PvEers eventually trying out PvP for a change of scenery. You’ll still have your hard-leaning factions but as long as both groups are treated fairly, and neither receives better rewards than the other, they can easily co-exist.

You can’t expect WoW 1-60 in DAoC, and then still expect the RvR game to be there as well.

Syncaine argues that you could never make a game with the PvE quality of WoW or Everquest with the endgame RvR/PvP quality of DAOC or Asheron’s Call. That’s an absolute statement that is absolutely incorrect. Just because we haven’t seen one yet, does not make it impossible. I think the game that can appeal to both the PvPer and the PvEer will ultimately be a huge success.

If only I could give you more specifics, but if people can’t even imagine the possibilities for PvE/PvP harmony, they’ll probably have to see it to believe it. Luckily, there’s one game releasing in the nearish future that just might make believers out of the naysayers.

  2. I think you’re a bit optimistic in what the PvE will be like in WAR.

You also have to realize that a large portion of the PvE obsessed crowd sees raiding as ultimate in PvE. The devs have already stated that there wont be any raid-type dungeons in WAR. The closest thing will be the end battles in the city sieges, but I can guarantee the raiding crowd wont be happy that the only raid option they have is completely dependent on their side sacking an enemy’s capitol.
