WarCry Dev Chat (cool bits)

January 30, 2008 – 10:13 pm

Here are the most interesting parts I took away from the chatlog:

<~DelmarWynn> {TO}Vortan: Will there be any kind of Open Beta or Stress test? If so, how do you get into the event?
<@[WAR]James> Open Beta to us means a larger test with no NDA, so yes there will be one! As we get closer to such an event we’ll provide a variety of ways for folks to get into it. Stay tuned to the Newsletter and Herald for more info :)

I recall hearing rumours of this earlier, so it’s nice to have confirmation. It appears that rather than allowing anyone and everyone access to it, they may draw from the close beta pool instead. I think 560k+ people is sufficient to run an extensive stress test and root out the last of the bugs.

<~DelmarWynn> Silarr: can the UI be modified with mods, not bots(healbots etc), just mods to give it a new look.. if yes which scripting language is going to be supported?
<@[WAR]Josh> The UI will be totally customizable in terms of appearance and utility. For folks who understand what it means: It’s all Lua-based, so experienced modders will be right at home in WAR. We actually have a super-select handful of beta testers playing with it already.

I am definitely happy to see this is still on the books for release. You can read my deeper thoughts about the client addons and mods here.

<~DelmarWynn> Nenwe: Battlesystem question is it like in Daoc that you need to wait for the autoattack rotation to execute your attacks or do you have those instant strikes like in some other games?
<@[WAR]Gersh> WAR doesn’t queue up attacks to an auto attack timer
<@[WAR]Gersh> Hit a button and things happen
<@[WAR]Gersh> However Auto attack is like a heart beat and will always be doing damage throughout the fight

Woohoo! Weapon speed will have an impact on your overall DPS but it won’t hinder you as much as it did in DAOC for “styled” attacks.  This brings the system more in line with WoW’s combat and I am a big fan of that.

<~DelmarWynn> Basin|Dynatos: How is the targeting for hybrid careers set up? For example, Vanguard allowed two different targets: one friendly (for healing purposes), and one hostile (for damage purposes). Do you plan on doing something similar for WAR?
<@[WAR]Gersh> Yup, we’re working on a number of features to make targeting a little friendlier
<@[WAR]Gersh> In our latest beta builds we’ve introduced a Dual target system that will allow a player to keep a Hostile target and a Friendly target
<@[WAR]Gersh> as a result there are a number of Careers who also have transfer abilities… The warrior priest is a great example where one strike can damage his foe, and then inspires his friend with a nice stat buff

This sounds very interesting and I’d never heard it mentioned before. The potential for better hybrid class management is much improved in this system.  I wonder how far they’ll take it.  Will you be able to queue up attacks and heals or buffs and debuffs? Nuking an enemy while I passively buff an ally is sweet. Maybe I’m just biased since I plan to play a shaman at launch.

  2. I agree with the fighting style. WoW’s way was pretty decent.

This is a pretty trivial question. But, I assume Warherald will be a lot like Camelotherald where you can see the top players/guilds, control of keeps, etc? I always loved that feature.

Sidenote: I’ve been planning on being a Shaman as well!

  3. From what I’ve read (sorry, can’t find links), they plan on making the WAR Herald like the Camelot Herald on crack! Apparently, they want to track and display even more information than they did in DAOC.

    Sidenote: Waaagh!

  4. WoW’s fighting style was decent, although I remember being semi-frustrated by it in super quick situations like arenas, sometimes clicking a button to have nothing happen, then clicking it again.

Or worse, the frustration that resulted from macros used to go from 2h to 1h and shield, sometimes resulting in just holding a 1h and no shield, lol. I thinking with the 8 maximum abilities you can load before combat WAR might be better at making the combat a little more precise, again, not that WoW was all that bad.
