The Greenys (2007): Vote for your favorite WAR community sites!

2007 Greeny Awards Trophy“What exactly are The Greenys,” you ask? Let me tell you!

The Greenys is an annual awards ceremony not unlike the Emmys or Oscars but instead of showcasing television and film, The Greeny Awards promote the best Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning community sites in five major categories (from the past year). These are sites that share lots of useful information and provide interesting discussion material for rabid WAR fans!

Rather than prescribe arbitrary criteria and risk showing favoritism, I’ve opened nominations and voting to WAR fans everywhere.

The five major categories are (in no particular order):

  1. Best Web Forum
  2. Best News Source
  3. Best Resource Site (background information, lore, videos, screenshots)
  4. Best Blog/Commentary Site
  5. Best Guild Site

Here are the simple rules and regulations:

Nominees

  • You can nominate your own site in the single category you think it fits best within
  • Each site can only be nominated in one category, so choose wisely
  • For best results, place the “Vote for Us” badge on your site (feel free to customize it) and link it to this article
  • Tell your friends or fans to hop on over and cast their vote!
  • I have excluded The Greenskin from this competition… to be fair to everyone else! Muahaha!

Voters

  • To vote, simply enter the name and category for each site you wish to vote for
  • You may vote once in each of the five different categories (no links necessary)
  • My spam blocker holds any post containing multiple links (more than two) for moderation
  • You must use a real email address when voting so I can contact you if “fishy” voting patterns arise (your email is kept private and will not be used for any other purpose; Greenskins honour! Hmmm… that sounds like an oxymoron.)
  • Discussion is encouraged!

Winners of a 2007 Greeny will be awarded a permanent link and brief write-up on a special, prominent page on this site. To be fair and showcase as many awesome WAR-related sites as possible, there will be a Gold, Silver, and Bronze winner in each category! Also, winners will receive a Greeny ribbon to proudly display on their site, should they choose.

The nomination and voting period ends February 11, 2008 at midnight EST. That gives you an entire month to promote yourselves and this contest. Have at thee! ;)

UPDATE #1: To nominate or vote for someone, simply scroll to the very bottom of this page and leave their website name in a comment. Please include your email address in the proper field for verification purposes. There are over 200 comments now, so I apologize for the amount of scrolling you must do! :P

UPDATE #2: Many people are voting for sites in different categories, so I will be using my own discretion and working with the site admins to find the category that they feel they best represent. For instance, WAR-RvR.net would rather be known as a RESOURCE site and the votes are about 50/50 between a resource and a forum, while some even voted them as a news source. Obviously people use sites for different purposes and no-one can be faulted for this situation, but it’s only fair that the site admins have a say in where they are nominated. Any site admin wishing to switch their category, please contact me: snafzg (at) gmail (dot) com. In order to prevent gaming, this is where I will use my own discretion. If I don’t think you belong in a certain category, then you can’t make the switch. All the nominees and voters seem as fair as myself, so I don’t foresee this becoming an issue.

UPDATE #3: Some people have commented and sent emails regarding the GUILD category being one giant spamfest, i.e., the biggest guild will get the most votes and win, even if their site isn’t that good. I completely agree that this is a problem. Fortunately, this problem has a solution… and it’s in all your hands.

If you haven’t already voted for a guild, why don’t you take a quick browse through the list of above links and vote for the guild site you think is most deserving? Many people have yet to vote in the guild category while leaving votes in the others. I’m not going to punish guilds for trying to get their names out there, and if the site is really bad, I can’t quite punish them for that either. If you think a site is bad, even though it is doing well in the rankings, why don’t you vote for a better site? That’s how a democratic vote works…

Always remember: YOU MAY ONLY VOTE ONCE PER CATEGORY! If I catch people voting multiple times, I will discount all their votes and if I catch people trying to beef up their own guild, I will be forced to take more extreme measures. All the other categories seem to be coming along just fine and I’d like the guild category to work out the same. If this category becomes poisoned, I may just close it completely for this round of voting and assign Greeny Awards to those sites I feel are the best. Heck, I may do it that way next year anyway to avoid the headaches (should I get any this year).

Please respect this contest, your guildies, and your fellow competitors. This goes for all categories. I want to run this friendly and fair. Thanks for all the great support you’ve shown so far!

UPDATE #4: Paul Barnett’s blog will now win an honorary award rather than take first place away from a community site because he doesn’t quite fit the criteria for these awards. Not only is he a dev, but his blog barely focuses on WAR at all and is rarely updated. This category was meant to showcase sites like the other nominees and it is obvious that he has been getting votes due to his popularity and recognition more than anything else. Not to knock his site, it’s just that he doesn’t fit the awards criteria and is therefore ineligible for competition.

Of note, the controversial guild site, “Acolytes,” has added more content to their WAR site and is now a contender to win an award.

    Warhammer Alliance, for so many more reasons than it being the most frequented site. Lack of picture signatures, non-cascading forums, great no nonsense staff, developers as far as the eye can see (as well as an actual developer post tracker without which it should be illegal for a WAR forum to exist), a distinct lack of over-stickified forums where you have to scroll down to get to the actual discussions. All of this makes WHA the current leader of the pack.

    It’d be close for War-RvR to come in and grab this one here but they are already in another category.

    Best Blog/Commentary:
    Its a toss up between Josh Dreschers own blog and the wonderful antics of Secret Lives of Mobs which in the end SLoM wins out on because it is the great commentary/comic of 2007 no questions asked. But Josh Drescher’s site deserves to be nominated.
