Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from The Greenskin

Another year has come,
Another year has passed;
But all we Greenskins care about
Is kickin’ Dwarfie ass!

For WAR, it is approaching,
They say some time — Q2;
With great anticipation,
We plans to slaughter you!

So come on, EA Mythic,
Don’t you dare delay;
For if you do, that day you’ll rue,
We really wants to play!

Welcome to 2008, fellow skinnies! This will be one of those year-in-review posts where I get to bask in the glory of all the fame, fortune, and success 2007 brought my site. Ahahahaha… Don’t worry, it will be pretty short because The Greenskin has only been online since mid November (it feels like much longer). I’ll also make some blogging resolutions for the upcoming year. Here we go!

Since launching about 7 weeks ago this site has seen ~9000 page views from ~4900 unique visitors, or so Google Analytics tells me. My Wordpress dashboard tells me 232 people have commented on 50 articles. A community fan site is nothing without the community, so I really want to thank everyone for their participation!

The five most visited articles in descending order have been:

  1. Interview with Garthilk of Warhammer Alliance
  2. Official site launch / first comic (Greenskin Bullies) / MMO Calendar giveaway
  3. Comic - Why Orcs Can’t Read
  4. Comic - Silly Elves
  5. Comic - We of Little Words

I must also thank the top 10 referring sites who sent so much traffic to date (descending)!

  1. Warhammer Alliance
  2. WAR-RvR.net
  3. Josh Drescher
  4. MMORPG.com
  5. Keen and Graev
  6. Chaos War Host
  7. WAR Gamewiki
  8. Ten Ton Hammer
  9. Bullies Guild
  10. War Mongers Guild

Here are my blogging resolutions for 2008:

Produce more content. Maintaining this site is challenging at times. Any blog that wants to be recognized as a niche leader must produce timely, rich, and beautiful content or people will find the information somewhere else. Let’s face it… if people want to read Warhammer Online news, there are already many established and excellent resources (The Herald, forums, guild sites, etc.). Exclusive content is what will draw fans to this site: the webcomic, interviews, opinion pieces, Greenskin lore, and various other original articles. Unfortunately (or fortunately - depending on how you look at it), I am only one man with a day job, a family, and several other hobbies outside blogging and gaming. I will need help and it’s my mission in 2008 to build an interesting and dynamic writing team for this site.

Get more organized. Currently, I keep all my thoughts in a Google Doc so I can access if from anywhere if an idea crosses my mind. Unfortunately, the single document is getting pretty unruly! Instead of one, extremely long document, I will break things up into sections. This strategy should work well when I bring on additional writers. Google Docs is amazing for online collaboration.

Have more fun. Why would I be doing this if it isn’t any fun? I probably wouldn’t. One thing I want to do is eliminate the self-imposed deadlines for things like the webcomic. This may suck for some people, but for me, this blog, and the comic especially, is a hobby just like hockey, baseball, gaming and the various other activities that make my life worth living. I don’t want to feel bad about missing a comic deadline because I want to take my wife out for dinner or take the dog out for a long hike. So I won’t, however, this won’t be an excuse to slack on the comic and other “deadliney” type postings. I still want to put out 3-4 per month, but this will let me get them done when it’s convenient rather than brushing off RL responsibilities to make the time.

Continue networking. One thing I’ve found in my short blogging career is that there are a lot of really cool WAR fans out there. I’ve met many people through this site and the forums, and I can’t wait to meet even more. Recently, the owner of a fairly popular and new-like-us Chaos community fan site sent me an email asking to exchange links, and from the ensuing conversation we’re actually planning something much bigger.

So again, Happy New Year, and I hope you continue to visit and tell your friends about The Greenskin! If you have any questions, feedback, or ideas that you think will improve this site, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or contact my by email: snafzg at gmail dot com. Cheers!

  4. Heh, thanks guys! 2008 should definitely be interesting for WAR fansites, not to mention all the fans drooling to play.

    I am staring at my 33% complete comic right now… a friend just messaged me to play some TF2… temptation is strong but I really need to get off my butt and finish this thing! :P

    Also, aye! Can’t wait for the news this year! :) Should be great. Not to mention, it’ll be retail for half the year, so, that means a big job for me, an’, anything to stand out in the community, as I’m sure you know about now! xD
