WAR and AoC to weaken WoW’s grip | Hardcore Casual on PvP (RvR)…

According to the BBC, “industry insiders” feel as though Warhammer Online and Age of Conan may be the strongest contenders to weaken World of Warcraft’s hold on a huge number of MMORPG gamers (9.3M subscribers who average 17 hours played per week). The insiders forecast success because WAR and AoC each have a rich history, expand beyond WoW’s established mechanics, and will release with a high level of polish. There’s another interesting read over at Hardcore Casual about positive sum vs. negative sum PvP. Positive sum means everyone gains something in PvP, even the losers - like people who might AFK in WoW battlegrounds. On the flip side, negative sum PvP means people will lose something for failure - like corpse looting in old school MUDs. To me, WAR appears to be aiming somewhere in the grey middle. They may reward players in scenario PvP, even if their team loses, however, if your capital city gets sacked, you’re going to feel an obvious loss if you can’t access your shops, trainers, and quest-givers.

  2. Ah the BBC, one of my favorite stops for news online (or on television if you’re lucky enough to have the channel in North America).

They’ve reported on WoW quite a few times over the years on various points from subcription numbers to the time someone brought out a plague from Hakkar in ZG to Orgrimmar. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more coverage of WAR from the BBC in the future.

  3. Indeed. Positive coverage from a media organization like the BBC is definitely a good thing.
