Activision vs. EA? Round 1…

December 4, 2007 – 1:30 pm

Activision vs. EA?I just read an interesting article over at Computer and Video Games which addresses a new third-party game developer rivalry bubbling up between EA and Activision.

Here’s a brief quote:

“…We’re always at our best when we have a clearly defined competitor,” said an EA rep. “[The Activision/Vivendi merger] doesn’t change our strategy. Our CEO John Riccitiello has been encouraging senior managers to think of all other publishers as one large competitor–he’s been encouraging them to think like challengers.”

As if EA Mythic didn’t have enough to think about when it was just Vivendi Blizzard… now they’re facing the powerhouse of Activision Blizzard. Let’s hope the competition makes each company release higher quality products that draw new players into the MMORPG genre.

What do you think?

  2. Mergers can be good or bad, EA in the past has done well, but if you step outside of software and look at an example like the AMD-ATI merger, it isn’t so clear. Intel and Nvidia, individually, are currently trouncing the new AMD-ATI in both the processor and video card markets.

I was really surprised when I read on the BBC that Activision had merged with Blizzard to form Activision Blizzard. I’m not sure if I like the name, but I hope they do well and inspire intense competition in the future, something always good for the consumer.

  3. I’ll agree that competition is definitely a good way to make companies strive to develop the best possible products. One possible drawback is that we (the consumers) may become less informed of future products if the companies don’t want their competitors knowing what they’re developing.

  4. I suppose that’s possible, but at some point the company has to come out and market it before release. Blizzard kept Star Craft II a secret for quite awhile and it didn’t really hurt us too much.

WAR on the other hand… We’ve known for so long that they now feel they need a new cinematic to get people hyped up once again.
