The Greenskin Launches with New Comic and Chances to Win Beta Keys
November 22, 2007 – 12:04 amThe day of our official launch has arrived and I’d like to celebrate it by sharing the first webcomic in our ongoing series titled, “The Greenskin!” I hope to release a new strip every Thursday from here on out, so please grab our RSS feed if you like what you see.
I’d also like to give out some cool prizes and chances at winning Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning beta keys. Previously, I wrote about an MMO Calendar produced by MMO Portal, where all profits are donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. If you read the article, you’ll notice that EA Mythic is giving players a chance at winning beta keys by purchasing these calendars as an incentive for the fund raiser.
Our contest is pretty simple: Leave a comment on our blog before Thursday, November 29 at 17:00 EST (that’s 5pm) and your name will be entered to win one of five MMO Calendars! Your name will be entered only once per individual article, so please don’t spam - but do keep chatting if you wish to contribute to the conversation. Older posts are included as well.
I will gather all names from all comments on articles made between the time this post goes live and 5pm (EST) on November 29 and place them in a hat. My better half (aka wifey) will draw names out of that hat - specifically, a toque since we live in Canada and it’s starting to get chilly! You can’t win more than one calendar because I want to spread the joy, but remember, the more articles you comment on, the better your chances are at winning.
I will contact the winners on Friday via email (so make sure you comment with a valid address!) and announce the winner list during the following week. To ensure that YOUR IDENTITY qualifies for a beta key (or any of the other fabulous prize donations) and that the calendar is mailed to you, I will need your contact information so I can place the order on your behalf. I’ll even email you a copy of the receipt. If you feel hesitant to share this information, you can order the calendar yourself and I’ll reimburse the winners via Paypal (upon receipt).
One caveat! I want you to actually contribute or spark conversation with your comments. Leaving comments like “First!” or “Hahah, I wanna win a calendar, yeh dern Stunty!” will not get your name entered into The Almighty Toque. Showing others that you actually read the article by leaving a somewhat thoughtful comment WILL get your name entered into our hat.
Thank you all, and good luck!

Hey, mate
Great job on the new comic!
Great to have some more activity in the W.A.R. community.
Good luck,

How about a giant squig that come back to eat the orc.
Nice site btw
By juansantoire on Nov 22, 2007
Great job on the comic, I hope to continue reading more EVERY Thursday! If you need ideas of stuff to talk about, feel free to email me and talk about Magus things ^_^.
Now, maybe if some of your comics get big we will see them in the 2009 MMO calender lol.
Be back later to chat it up some more.

Thanks for the support all!
The four main characters of this comic will be a Choppa, Black Orc, Squig Herder, and Shaman. I’m thinking of naming the Shammy after myself (Snafzg) but don’t have firm names for the other characters yet. Feel free to leave some suggestions.
I definitely want to feature new races/classes every so often to give the comic a bit more flavour (and appeal to a wider audience). Stories I have written so far include a Dwarven Hammerer and High Elf Archmage, and a couple other classes as well.
I’m not too familiar with the Magus, so I’ll definitely get in touch for some story ideas!
By Snafzg on Nov 22, 2007
PS. The Goblin totally has a pet Squiggie and he’ll be making an appearance soon!
By Snafzg on Nov 22, 2007
Not a problem at all, and I will try to help think of same names for those characters.
By Arkane on Nov 22, 2007
Also, the first user that posted has a terrific name for a Squig Herder.
By Arkane on Nov 22, 2007
Very orky! I approve!
‘Cept dat picture needz more green! An’ yer site fing needz more green!

By ebret on Nov 22, 2007
Nice comic! I agree with Murais, though… you need green! Lots of green! haha it would be cool, in my opinion.
Have a fun time writing! We want to see more
By tapeworm on Nov 22, 2007
Hehe, thanks again. At some point I want to start colouring my strips (lotsa green there) but first I need to get good at drawing them.
I’ll redo my page header this weekend to bring in some more green as it has been requested!
By Snafzg on Nov 22, 2007
Look forward to seeing more! Can’t wait until it’s colored in.
I’m not too good with Orky names but if any pop into mind I’ll post ‘em here.
By Saterny on Nov 22, 2007
I’m an Orc irl, but don’t tell the government.
By anon on Nov 22, 2007
Good to see you guys on board with the WAR info and updates, I’ll make sure to visit often. Great job so far.
By Gregsid on Nov 22, 2007
Great new site. Always good to read oppiniosn of other fans.
Keep up the good work!
By Mikes on Nov 23, 2007
Nice comic!
Good focus on the orcs, they’ve always been my favorite race for comedy value
Can’t wait for some squig jokes. =)
By Delthanesh on Nov 23, 2007
Good job Brooke. As for the beta invite, I’m already in it. Maybe I’ll see you sometime in game .
By Buta on Nov 23, 2007
All too close a reminder of the feeling you get bumping into a higher level out in the wilderness.
Good job, adding to feeds.
By DrunkenPrayer on Nov 23, 2007
Always looking to help out creative folks and web comix are high on the list. You will be linked on the WarMongers guildsite ASAP.
Awesome job and best of luck.
P.S. I don’t need a calendar, I already bought a few as it’s a good cause, so no need to enter my name.
By Osyshnir on Nov 23, 2007
@Buta - I r teh jealous!
@Osyshnir - Thanks a bunch and cheers on your MMO Calendar purchases. I’m getting an extra one for myself when I place these orders next week.
@Everyone - I’m starting my regular postings, so I hope you like what you’re seeing!
By Snafzg on Nov 23, 2007
Image wise it’s a bit bland but the joke was good.
By oakae on Nov 23, 2007
Have you decided on any names yet or do you have any in mind that you are trying to narrow down?
By Arkane on Nov 23, 2007
@oakae - I agree with you, but like many other artists, I hope to improve over time.
@Arkane - Not yet, but I’m thinking that I want to stay true to Greenskin naming conventions in the Warhammer universe. I don’t have enough expertise in that area to come up with any examples yet. Ideally, I want to take the accepted norm and put a funny spin on it.
I’ll have to do some research this weekend. Can you point me to any good resources?
By Snafzg on Nov 23, 2007
Go to WarhammerAlliance.com and look at their thread about names. I haven’t checked the entire site for it just yet but I saw one in the Shaman section. Which also tells you some rules of naming them.
By Arkane on Nov 23, 2007
Well, you can always check out the Greenskins Warhammer Army Book. It’s the best resource out there for stories and characters and the like. You could also check the White Dwarf magazine numbers that cover the Greenskins in some way or another… I believe you can look all that up via the Games Workshop official site, or at any GW store nearby if you have one. =)
By tapeworm on Nov 23, 2007
Try to work something out like that. Pretty much the same way orcy names work (Grimgor, Gorbad, Azhag, Dork,) but with………uhhh, well, figure it out.
And don’t forget to add a lot of Zs and Gs.
And, if you wish to, a surname or moniker relating to what the character is notable for.
Such as Grom the Paunch, he is known as such because of his overly bloated stomach.
That is from WHA
By Arkane on Nov 23, 2007
Score, thanks for the tips!
I’ll have a look this weekend and post some examples.
By Snafzg on Nov 23, 2007
No problem, look forward to reading them!
By Arkane on Nov 23, 2007
Ha ha ha. So true, no matter how good (or big in this case) you are there will always be some one better. A very good lesson for people to learn. I hope to recreate my ol’ buddy from D&D Thokk, my level 17 barbarian.
By Zaekman on Nov 24, 2007
WAAAGH!
Very witty comic. Orks FTW!
By jim on Nov 24, 2007
Great work on the comic. Keep these coming!
By Vith on Nov 24, 2007
Thanks for stoppin’ by and remember, your name is entered once for each thread you comment on, so feel free to add your two cents all over this site, just make sure they’re not spammy in nature.
As for some names, I found the thread you Arkane mentioned, and this site also: http://warhammervault.ign.com/View.php?view=Columns.Detail&id=32
Click that link for some cool Greenskin roleplay tips!
Anyway, here are the names I’ve come up with:
Snafzg da Smrt (Shaman)
Bluntt Trauma (Black Orc)
Gettoo da Choppa (Choppa)
Grump Rumphumper (Squig Herder)
- and his faithful squiggly sidekick, Rumpy!
Gettoo da Choppa is a play off a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liner.
What do you think? Heh.
By Snafzg on Nov 24, 2007
I love the choppa one lol
By Arkane on Nov 25, 2007
Heheheh… very true with Orks, good start perhaps some colour to liven things up?
By Kremlik on Nov 25, 2007
I’m starting to see quite a few comics popping up all over the web based on WAR, seems to be a bit of a Penny-Arcade effect going on with games now.
As to Snafzg’s name comments, I’d say the best one was snafg da smrt for the shaman. I’ll have to sit down and figure out a solid name for my character, a maurader, before WAR comes out. Looks like I have some time
By Knash on Nov 25, 2007
I agree w/ Arkane, your intended Choppa name is great! I also look forward to seeing some color added but not a single mention of a Dark Elf character?! Say one is at least being thought of as a possible side-character
By Vasagi on Nov 25, 2007
@Kremlik - My latest comic is sitting in my Greenskin Art folder, and yes… IT IS IN FULL COLOUR! Muahaha!
@Knash - The only two WAR specific comics I’ve found so far are “Secret Lives of Mobs” and “A Touch of Tentacle.” Can you please paste some links to any others you know about? I’d like to include the links in my sidebar.
@Vasagi - I have a Dwarven and High Elven model drawn for future comics, and I definitely have plans for Dark Elves too! I just haven’t drawn any yet! I think the DE will be my first “stab” at drawing a female character for this strip.
By Snafzg on Nov 26, 2007
I like the look, layout and color scheme you’ve selected here. Nothing overboard, and it still has a look of intelligence about it.
I wouldn’t consider changing it despite what others have said. I think the amount of green you’ve got now gives the Greenskin feel, without being Neon-Nerdy.
Good luck to you!
By Jonathan O'Toole on Nov 26, 2007
I was checking back to see if you had figured out any Ork names yet, and when I saw your Choppa name I nearly spewed juice all over my monitor. It caught me off guard, and I love it!
By Saterny on Nov 26, 2007

Ha, alright, I think you’re right, although I did come across this comic recently, although its just a one off WAR comic, not a series.
The comic is sad however, because it’s about waiting, and what’s worse, it’s outdated and about waiting till Q1 2008.
By Knash on Nov 26, 2007
niiiice. WAR is going to be an awesome game. I like the site
By wtshiz on Nov 27, 2007
Cool site
And that comic was quiet nice. Make more of those and longer ^^ You seriously got abit talent. (Not trying to suck-up for calendar) Will hang around waiting for others like that // Zabino
By Zabino on Nov 27, 2007
Cool webcomic ^^
By Refam on Nov 27, 2007
Thanks! I’ll be releasing my next comic late on Wednesday evening or early Thursday. It’s sitting in my art folder right now just waiting to be published but I don’t want to release it too early and have you guys thinking I’m a keener all the time!
Usually it’ll come out right at the deadline!
By Snafzg on Nov 27, 2007
Good to hear that you’ll be including other races apart from the Greenskins.
Not that there’s anything wrong with Greenskins, but like Mythic mentioned don’t all Orc jokes end with ‘And then I killed him’?
By Alienoverlord on Nov 27, 2007
Haha great, orcs FTW!
Warhammer rox and Greenskins are really funny and great, but if you think around it dwarves is pretty funny too with their ”hoooya! moooya! karateee!!” sounds from WAR videos
I think it would be awsome if an orc step on a dwarf or something.
But great site! and good luck with the comics!:D
By Kirill Ludviksen on Nov 27, 2007
@Kirill - You’re in luck because the next (full colour) strip actually involves a stinkin’ stunty!
By Snafzg on Nov 27, 2007
Great comic hope you guys keep it up
By cyb on Nov 27, 2007
Great initiative!
Garthlik at WA have said this before, but the further we come towards WAR release it occurs to me that he’s right. The WAR fan community is defenently the most inventive and productive community ever, so thumps up!
By Sluf on Nov 28, 2007
The humour of the comic is good, but the art needs a lot of work. Keep it up though, this could shape up to be a good web comic.
By Dysfinn on Nov 28, 2007
Just a small thing: It feels odd that the bigger orc actually sais “ders alwayz bigger orc”. It makes me think he’ve seen everything in the first 3 pics. That punchline could’ve been in a narrative bouble below, with the biggest orc just laughing a bit in the talk bouble.
But, then, I would never have come up with the idea of the joke in the first place. Good job!
By Jocho on Nov 28, 2007
Nice comic, good luck with it and I hope to see more.
And as said below looking forward to a full colour version.
By Jibber on Nov 28, 2007
Yeah as peopled said I think adding Colors to the comics might help a lot.Maybe just basic paint stuff to bold out the feeling of the comic.
Also this site look really promising. Hope to see more!
By Darkwhisper on Nov 28, 2007
Nice web site and really good comic.

By Tarnished on Nov 28, 2007
Good first effort! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us going forward.
By Mother on Nov 28, 2007
Wow… so many comments!
First, here’s my latest comic (in full colour):
http://thegreenskin.com/2007/11/28/we-of-little-words/
@Dysfin - I hope to improve over time!
@Jocho - I pondered that exact idea as I was creating the comic, but each panel is so limited for space that I thought it would be a bit more dynamic for the Bluntt to say it, even though I agree that it might be more effective as a narrative.
By Snafzg on Nov 28, 2007
Haha, nice comic. Looking forward to more of them!
Cheers,

Bookmarked and looking forward for your next comic!
By Ducktape on Nov 30, 2007
Nice seeing another site about war come up.
And don’t worry too much about the artistic bit. (UPDATE: This is supposed to be a dwarf and a goblin, not a viking and a reeeeeeeally tall shaman. My drawing still sucks I guess!)
It’ll come too you. If you go and look at the 1st vs current on other web comics, you’ll notice the differences.
By Naglfar on Dec 1, 2007
Thanks for the kind words Naglfar!
By Snafzg on Dec 2, 2007
Wow awesome comic lol. I am really excited for this game as a long time warhammer player(tabke top) and a long time wow player(:( ). I can’t wait to get out of that piece of crap and move on to the next gen of MMO’s .
