Concept Art - Da Orcs!
November 19, 2007 – 3:32 pmPart of what inspired me to create this site was to get back into comic drawing again. I’ve been an avid Marvel Comics reader since 1991 and had dreams of becoming a comic book artist. Unfortunately, I got into other things during high school in the mid 90’s and drawing took a permanent back seat.
Over the past couple weeks I’ve been sketching out lots of concepts for my webcomic characters and one thing became glaringly obvious… I had lost my touch! Seriously, drawing is NOT like riding a bicycle. It’s more like strapping on a pair of ice skates after having been wheelchair-bound for a decade. Things are shaky! Eventually, after months of practice, I think I’d be able to regain some of my former style and technique, but I’m on a (self-imposed) deadline here! I have dozens of fans who, although they don’t know it yet, are drooling to see this new strip!
You can lie to me by rolling your eyes and saying “Pshaw…” but don’t lie to yourselves. You know you want it!
I decided to put myself on the fast track, so I loaded up Adobe Illustrator, clicked on the pen tool, and started making some squigglies. I want clean lines, minimal detail, and a humorous, cartoon-like style, because let’s face it… I’m no Joe Madureira or Norman Rockwell (though I’m inspired by their styles). Also, I’m not really a natural artist anymore, so these things take time. The simpler they are, the quicker I’ll be able to produce ‘em!
Here’s a sneak peak at two of my four main Greenskin characters, the Black Orc and Choppa:

The concept for this webcomic is to examine the Warhammer Online universe through the eyes of a Greenskin. Orcs and goblins are natual protagonists for a comedy strip because EA Mythic is designing them with an innate sense of humour, and when you’ve got Paul Barnett endorsing the race, things are bound to get funny!
I’m more of a writer than an illustrator, so my scripts are far more developed than the art is at this stage. I have four months worth of scripts sitting in a Google doc, and they’re leaving bloody claw marks on the inside of my computer screen in an attempt to escape. I’m starting out with the first one I wrote on the back of a sticky note (the front was already full with telephone messages) when I couldn’t fall sleep at 2AM a couple Mondays ago.
I have every intention of releasing it this Thursday. I want to release another one each Thursday from then on.
Please leave a comment and show your support and keep me motivated! ![]()

I think these are great for what you are doing. Obviously like others have said, color would be great but until then this is fine. Absolutely love the shield as well.

I wouldn’t say the illustrations are that bad. Plus a good story is more important in a comic in my opinion. If it’s clever enough, even stick-Orcs would work I think!

A new art release every Thursday would be sweet for this blog.
Vasagi is definitely right about even stick orcs along side good plot or dialogue working just fine, so any level of art after that is all bonus.
